What is the maximum VRAM that this computer ( z210 ) can run? I am looking to buy a graphics card and I don't want to waste my money by getting a bigger graphics card than I need.
I don't think you fully understand the relationship between the computer, video card and software
video ram on a video card is what displays the image and stores the game textures and in general more is better
however some video cards that are low powered and unable to run a game at a resolution of say 1080p will attempt to get you to buy them by adding ram that the card is really unable to use
my best advice is to
1. determine how many watts your system provides for a video card
2. look at some games/software you want to play/use and read the recommended video requirements
in your case the z210 is a SFF (small Form Factor) system and as such has a custom power supply/motherboard
and it's limited to video cards that consume 70 watts or less these cards will NOT have a AUX GPU power connector which makes it easy to ID cards that will work in your system a nvidia 1030 will work or perhaps a 1050 if you run just a single pci-e video card and no other pci-e cards installed
is your z420 win 10 compatible?,...no it's not all of the successful posts on this forum and the internet saying successful installs of win 10 are obviously wrong because your having a problem right?
you have a video display issue, not a windows 10 issue per say
did you do a win 7 to 10 upgrade? if so i suspect that your current windows 7 video settings are wrong and when win 10 tries to import them it is unable to
set your video settings under win 7 back to defaults (no custom video settings) and remove any 3rd party video tweak applications
furthermore you might want to set win 7 to 1024x768 at 60Hz before trying to update
hint, dl the latest win 10 usb key installer (16gb key needed) and FROM WITHIN WIN 7 go to the usb key and run setup or install to start the win 10 upgrade doing it this way will grant you a free digital win 10 pro license that is tied to your motherboard

I have managed to solve this problem.
Not only do you need to ensure the card is updated to the latest firmware, done automatically in my case, you also need to go into the BIOS and change the settings to enable the card to accept usb & video signals without authorisation.
Once this is done, the USB ports become available on the Thunderbolt 3 card.
Really impressed with this card, it enables me to use a TB3 drive, its very very fast so is worth the purchase.
Recommend this for anyone who wishes to add TB3 functionality to an HP Z8 G4 workstation.
I just purchase a T640 thin client with Win 10 IoT for testing.
With the current T5740/T620/T630's WES 7 thin clients we have now there are shortcuts under Administrative Tools call "Enable User Security" and "Disable User Security". Basically toggles all of the registry lock down settings of the "User" account. The idea is to disable, customize the user account, and then enable.
The issue is I can not find any such programs on the T640's. I've been running into issues manually trying to use registry/group policy. (these are not connected to active directory).
I just want to confirm I'm not missing anything.

Does anyone know the life-cycle of the HP Thin Clients? I'm trying to create an upgrade proposal for the HP t520 (x195). Right now I am set on buying new HP t530 (x195) with Win10 IoT, 16 GB m.2 2242, and 4 Gb RAM. It would be cheaper to upgrade (OS, M.2, RAM), but I'm just not sure if HP will continue to support Win7 after Microsoft Stopped (Windows 7 Extended Support End Date, 1/14/2020).
Knowing the life cycle of the t520 would really help me give an extra push. Any recommendation would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Just installed w 10 64 bit Pro on a Z420. for some reason the SAS driver didn't work Also has an issue with a PCI driver. HP supportfriend solved that problem somehow, and I found the OLD VERSION of the SAS driver on the OLD Thread. Installed that and now appears to work.

I currently have a Intel Xeon 4 core processor and I would like to upgrade to a intel xeon 6 core, but I dont know if I have a v1 or v2. I've checked the boot block date and it says 2019.
Please re-check your boot block date in the BIOS as I believe it should be 2013 or earlier (I have a Z620 with a 2013 boot block date). If the boot block date is prior to 2013 then you can only install the v1 version of the the CPU.

As a general rule, if the CPU isn't listed in the quick specs then it won't work in your Z420.

The Z420 version 2 is a real jewel.... and as we have pushed its limits we have found it is essentially a Z620 version 2 when both are running one processor. Given that it is a single processor workstation you don't need to feel compelled to buy a processor that has 2 QPI links (more expensive, works in workstations running 1 or 2 processors, and is a bit slower for the same cores/clock speed). Brian and Bambi here have mastered overclocking of the HP-approved processors that also are unlocked enough by Intel to overclock.
There is cooling information here, to include HP liquid cooling, and the discovery that a specific heatsink/fan from the Z640/Z440 workstations fits perfectly in the Z420. That heatsink has almost double the cooling surface area as the stock Z420 heatsink/fan so the need for liquid cooling when overclocking a processor can be reduced. There are some added cooling tips to learn specific to the Z420.
Some of my recent work also has shown that the Z420 version 2 can run the same highest speed memory that the Z620 version 2 can. For example, 8 sticks of 8GB ECC registered 1866 MHz RAM, and even 8 sticks of 16GB ECC registered 1866 MHz RAM. This is also HP server memory, the reason it is available at reasonable cost, used. Servers tend to get retired more quickly than workstations, in significant quantities. Some bits get recycled, such as memory. None of our high end work here is HP-certified. For this size workstation HP had moved on to the Z440, and now on to the Z4 G4 generation. There is a cost benefit to being 2 generations back, even more so when the workstation is a Z420 v2.
So, get into your BIOS and answer the question of its boot block date. That is under the first tab in BIOS. We can go from there....

Unless you plan on using only the "CUDA" cores on the second card, it's pointless to install a second consumer video card as SLI does not work on hp workstations unless you have a approved "QUADRO" model video card
