Hi, try to remove 4 stick and fill only slots with the same collor - there should be always 4 slots same solor, and another 4 in another color. If some slots do not work, you will see it - then slots KO or pin bent. Then do the same for 4 slot and test all your memory dimms.

Also check if your all 8 dimms reads the same 2Rx4 .....on the sticker, or some 1Rx4, 1Rx8 etc, this may cause problem sometimes.

And for CPU upgrade 1650v1 to something else - do not do it, 1650V2 is not much faster,  not makes sense, invest in graphics or SSD , or find cheap 1660/1680v1 (and mind pins when swaping Smiley Happy )

1. RAM bank testing: I tried it all: like putting 2 x 8GB in 2 black slots in front area and 2 x 8GB again in 2 black slots in rear area. Or 1 x 8GB in DIMM 1/black and 1 x 8GB in DIMM 8 / black. Or putting stuff in pairs (front-back area) into the white slots. The results were always the same: BIOS seing only the stuff inserted into the rear area (banks 5...8) and nothing in banks 1...4.

2. Checking all th 8 DIMM chips individually. Yes, besides the same HP part number and Samsung UPC / serial number, they were all showing the same "2Rx4" coding on their tags.

3. CPU upgrade from 1650v1 to either 1650v2 or 2650v2. I know the performance differential shouldn't be that higher. But I forgot to mention the cost: The 1650v1 that was installed (and worked with HP Z420 bios boot block dated 2011) is evaluated by the ebay store for $110. The difference to get the 1650v2 is +$30 and to get the 2650v2 it is +$40. In the light of this new information (cost), would you still NOT do the upgrade? Any performance gain with gaming / higher single-clock freq?

Thank you!

Hi:

According to the support page, the last BIOS version released for the xw8600 was v01.46.

https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-xw8600-workstation/3432827

Direct link to the flash file...

http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp59001-59500/sp59218.exe

When you run the file, an information window will open.

Use the F10 BIOS flash method to update the BIOS in the PC running W10, because the Windows Based BIOS Flash program was not written to update the BIOS when running W10.

That is the easiest thing to do.

Get a usb flash drive.  Format it with the FAT32 file system.

Copt the contents of the DOS flash folder after you run the above file to the USB flash drive.

Restart the PC.

Tap the F10 key at the beginning of the HP welcome screen to get access to the BIOS.

Select the File menu>Flash system ROM command.

Select the USB drive and the PC should 'see' the files on the USB flash drive.

Follow the on screen instructions to update the BIOS.

To run the v2 CPU's you need the 2013 bootblock. There has been plenty written on this subject - feel free to browse the forum for more info.

The E5-1650v2 has the advantage that it can be overclocked in the Z420 by using Intel XTU. You are still limited to a 130W TDP limit but the performance gains are still substantial especially when fully utilizing just 1-2 cores (as many programs do).

The E5-2650 v2 has locked multiplier so it doesnt benefit from the above, while the E5-1650 v1 - while multiplier unlocked - does not respond to any tweaking in XTU (core multiplier sliders are grayed out).

Thank you for this - considering your new info, yes, it does make sense to upgrade to E5-1650 v2 (even if comparing to E5-1650 v1 the 100 MHz higher base clock rate is not too much). And the ebay store is only asking for $30 more for this upgrade.

And regarding the 2013 bootblock, your intervention was pure telepathy - in sync with my similar finding on a web forum on tomshardware, I guote:

"-To determine if the Z420 can support the v2 CPUs, look in the F10 BIOS setup for the boot block date
=> If the Z420 has a boot block date of 12/28/2011, it supports only the v1 CPUs
=> If the Z420 has a boot block block of 03/06/2013, it supports both the v1 and v2 CPUs.
HP does not support updating the boot block. "

Such requirement couldn't be more than welcome. Because by doing the upgrade to the 1650 v2, I would have a double confirmation that the seller will definitely give me another used Z420, completely different than the one which they have sent originally (I'm not sure if they "mix and match" mobos and cpus, and prefer instead to pick up a completely different Z420 from the recycled stock. And move only the RAM around). I shall explicitly ask them to triple-check that the bios shows (a) the 2013 bootblock, (b) v2 suffix for the CPU, (c) Right memory assignemnts in the banks and the memory type.

Thanks a lot for all this great info! I'll ask them to go with 1650v2 upgd. And either replace the 1TB spinning HD with, or add on base of that, also a 256GB SSD drive. Because I have noticed that the 1TB 7200 rpm hdd (a Western Digital) was super-noisy - either because the original owner has put it thru lot of intensive use, or it came from somewhere else, or maybe this Z420 does not have too much sound proofing / rubber washers around bays and hdd screws etc.

Along with those 2 upgrades, I also have this in my list of notes to ask them about for the upcoming Monday Feb 26 2018 (this is when the returned pc arrives back to them):

- Ask to take care of the thermal paste on the cpu.
- Ask to confirm that the cpu is not an ES (Engineering Sample) - is there a way to independtly check for this myself? Considering how many units they have, they should be coming from reputable stocks/businesses.
- Ask for the mounting rails / bay for an additional 3.5'' spinning hdd (if I leave the 1TB spinning hdd and get the ssd instead, which is another +$30).
- Ask for a discount using the 5% store discount code that I have received from the 1st (semi-failed) sale.
- Ask for a front fan mount (standard hp p/n?). Not sure if they would have such thing.
- Ask for the "Front RAM duct" plastic part. Not sure if they'll be able to honor that, or if it is really important for the front dimm 1...4 banks to not overheat.

Anything else that you would consider wise to ask about?

Yes, in your case it makes perfect sense to get the 1650 v2 - this will guarantee you get a new machine with the newer boot block date, which will ensure compatibility with both v1 and v2 CPU's and guarantee a better resale value when you come to sell the machine at a later date. The other advantages of the v2 chips which come to mind is:

i) official support for PCIe 3.0 - the v1 chips also support this but it is not in the specs, so for instance with Nvidia graphics cards you need a patch to make sure it runs at PCIe 3.0 rather than PCIe 2.0 speed and

ii) support for 1866Hhz memory vs 1600 MHz of the v1.

THe front fan kit is definietely nice to have although can be expensive and hard to find at this point in time. In any case they can be easily retrofitted later on. HP part number is A2Z46AA

The front RAM duct cover from what I am aware doesn't do much for RAM temperatures (in fact quite the opposite). THe main purpose is to ensure that the CPU cooler does not suck in the warm air from the RAM slots - this part was usually fitted on machines which came with more RAM as standard and again - if you can find the part it can easily be added later.

Once thing to also consider is perhaps going for the Z620 v2 instead of the Z420 v2 - arguably it has a slightly better / nicer case design and  the cooling options come as standard.

Tell 18-pin main power (p1) identical with the z820 or z420 z620 ? And what is the Pinout 8-pin PWR CPU0 (P3) 8-pin PWR MEM (P2), 6-pin PWR CPU1 (P4)? And maybe there is a schematic of the mainboard (motherboard) Hp Z820 WS? I would be very grateful.

Oh, I wasn't aware of the v1 series of Xeon E5 CPUs being finicky with PCIe 3.0 support. Thanks for pointing that out.

Ok about the front fan kit and front RAM duct - indeed they could be got at a later date. Thanks for explaining what the RAM duct's actual role is - to protect the cpu not the ram - this didn't came to my mind.

Z620 instead of Z420, I guess it's out of the question - the ebay store may not have it, or if it does, it may be pricier, not to mention bulkier? I'm already struggling to accept the z420 as a nice form factor for an HTPC type of setup (and mounted horizontally). Z420 is already maaasive, but that was the smallest I could find on the reused market with a strong PSU and PCI slot (for one DTS audio card I'm having). The Z220 CMT seemed smaller, but with 400W PSU. And even if it had PCI slot, it was only supporting i5/i7 and 32GB non-ECC ram max and non-ECC is very costly nowadays.

Thanks again for your input. I'll get in touch with the store Monday, especially to make them aware of the boot block 2013 version for the E5-1650 v2 cpu.

Duct part:

The HP Z420 can use a "Front Memory Duct" that is similar but smaller than that used in the Z400 and which also fits in the xw4600.  This guides airflow from the front of the case across the front bank of 4 memory sticks, and then up and out through the power supply via its fan.  It has option part number of C4J29AA, Spares P/N of 663346-001, and Assembly P/N of 663070-001.  The duct, of course, cools the memory and it also directs the hot air from the memory up and out through the power supply via its fan there.  Using the faster (1800 MHz) memory that the V2 Z420 can support makes this duct worth getting.

Straight from HP:
"The Z420 Front Memory Duct from HP is required for improved system cooling when
using 4 x 8GB and 8 x 8GB memory configurations and for configurations which include
the HP Liquid Cooling Solution thermal kit installed on the HP Z420 Workstation. The
Memory Duct can be an add on to to any configuration where an improvement in system
cooling is required."

"The HP Z420 Front Memory Duct is available to add to any configuration for improved
system cooling, but is required for 4 x 8GB and 8 x 8GB memory configurations and for
configurations including the HP Liquid Cooling Solution thermal kit. It can only be
installed on the HP Z420 Workstation."

Front PCI cooling fan and card guide:

Z420 Front PCI fan & card guide kit is comprised of fan holder & fan = KIT = 684024-001.  Black Plastic fan holder part: This is AS P/N 604781-003, etched on the plastic which is ***identical*** to the one used on the Z400 (which has AS P/N 604781-001).  Fan part: The Nidec fan, also used in other 92x92x25mm sites on the Z420 = 647113-001, and has OEM label of T92T12MS3A7-57A03, which is a 0.35A 12VDC fan and runs at 629 RPM in the Z420 v2. Do not know the RPM if used in the front PCI position in a Z400.

BIOS Update to enable SGX Version 2 on HP Z240

Hello,

I am trying to enable Intel SGX Version 2(see SGX2 Docs) on the HP Z240 Workstation.

The Intel Core i7-6700 supports SGX, but it also needs to be enabled in the BIOS configuration.

I deployed the latest BIOS update:

1.66 Rev.A (01/25/2018)

But still, querying CPUID with EAX=12H indicates that opcodes of SGX2 instructions are not supported.

Will the next BIOS update enable SGX Version 2? When will this update be released?

Is it even possible to enable Version 2 via BIOS update, or will it only be supported on new Intel hardware?

Thank you for your support and have a great day!

Hi,

We are using HP ProDesk 400 G3 Desktop Mini PC and have a question about power cord spec.

I would like to use this power cord with AC208V in the US.

Power supply spec says "Rated voltage range 100 – 240 VAC" however the power cord plug looks like for AC100V.

Power supply spec

Could you kindly tell us if we can use this power cord with AC208V?

Thank you for your support.

HP most likely uses several supliers for their power cords, as such i suspect there is no way to determine the origanal cord maker.

if you live in the USA a electrical part will have usually have a "UL" logo embossed on it

for Europe i don't know it's mark, but for asia it's a "CE" logo that says the maker has performed testing and says it's passed please also note that many shoddy resellers fake the logos,   but sometimes the part is to small to have this logo stamped or stickered  i suspect this  is why your cord does not have a mark

the ability of a power cord to safely carry the load a product may put on it is determined by several factors

1. the max load in amps that the wall socket can provide

in the US it's usually 20 amps max at 115 volts but the voltage can vary from 100 to 120 and this is still considered within spec

2. the thickness of the wire used in the cord (usually 16/18 gauge

3. the lenght of the cord, the longer the cord the thicker the wire need to prevent voltage drop

4.  the us, uses 115 volt at the socket, europe can vary but is usually  around 240, the higher voltage usually means the amperage drawn by the device will be lower than if using 115volts

if the cord is the one included with the HP system, it will have no problem powering the system if it's just being used from the drvice to the wall socket

Received the same BIOS message

Error: "942-memory training Error (CODE  3015)" - CPU0 DIMM3

z820

dual Xeon

96 GB

Linux CentOS7

Attempted changes:

· switching memory modules: no change

· cleaning contact pins on both memory modules and memory slot with isopropyl alcohol: no change

· memory tests: no errors detected after many hours or testing with memtest86+ (aborted since several passes had no errors. However, it is known that the test might not detect every potential error)

Observations:

· noted that the error and boot halt seem related to when starting up the system after it being powered off for a while. After having the system on a few minutes, and then rebooting, the error obviously occurs less (or maybe not at all).

Workaround:

· configure BIOS: bypass the requirement to press F1 on system changes in BIOS

Suggested test

· You can run a complete memory test after booting to determine if there is an actual memory issue, or if this error (or warning) is due to temperature changes, a temporary power deficit in circuits or something else temporary. For Linux you can try memtest86/memtest86+ or something equivalent.

Additionall changes

· in BIOS configuration the idle fan speed was increased one step as compared to default (0) to improve system stability. It seem to improve that.

It is not yet known if there is an actual issue with the CODE 3015 memory test error.

Hi Adam

I think the problem is the mainboard ! you need to contact hp support !

if you did everything you wrote!
you changed the banks of the ram and the problem subsists I think you have to change the motherboard
further proof would be to put only the first 2 banks and see if the system presents the error or if it freezes!
