Now the HP pheonix specs say it is 500W. However when you actually look at the power supply unit inside the case it is rated as 470W and not 500W.
Now practically speaking in reality we should be fine and nothing will really happen. However the current PSU is el cheapo. I also wanted to use the power supply and turn it around so it is constantly taking air from inside the case and exhausting it to the back to assist in keeping my case and internals cool as possible . Its a 750 EVGA P2 which has a huge fan.
Also I think about it from this point of view. I bought my HP Pheonix from Best Buy for $1350 CAD. The graphics card is +$1,000 CAD, do I really want to cheep out when the most valuable part in my computer is the graphics card? Its better to be safe and the new PSU unit is a modular design that helps with cable management.
The psu is not a cheapo like you might think. They use the same power supply that ships with a GTX 960, 970, 980 and 980Ti when custom ordered on the HP website. That 1080 even has lesser power requirements now compared to the 980Ti. They are also made by Delta.
Which they also make psu's for other name brands. Antec comes to mind. I just wanted to let you know you would have been perfectly fine. And to let others know. You dont have to run out and buy a overkill psu. HP is not going to pack in crap psu's for any mid to high end build.
Its not a crime either like you done by buying yourself another new psu. If that is what you or other want to do. No problem. Just want to assure you and others. The stock psu is good enough. BTW. You picked up a top notch psu. Well done and will last you for years to come with the 10 year warranty.
