why do you think a simple 6 to 8 pin adapter  would fail to work as it has no moving parts and is simply changing a 6 pin connector to a 8 pin connector  unless you buy a no name cheapo adapter from ebay that uses the wrong gauge wire there is nothing to go wrong

this forum has a "SEARCH" feature please use it and read all of the numerous posts, many of which directly pertain to your question

a more important question is  the power supply,..... there is the optional 700 watt supply (with the two 6 pin gpu connectors)

and the base 525 watt unit (one GPU connector) which is not suitable for a 2080 much less a 2080 TI which draws 250 watts

https://www8.hp.com/h20195/v2/getpdf.aspx/c04400038.pdf

looking at the HP z440 quickspecs, no HP approved card is drawing over 100 watts, so i would caution you not to install a card that draws over 1.5 times the wattage  of a HP highend approved card

you can however replace the power supply with a AXT supply that can support the 2080 TI power draw using a adapter

Re: Which SAS/RAID controller will give best performance

Hi, Thanks for the response.

System Config is below.

Dual E5-2690 with 64GB Ram each.

Quadro K5000

HP NC365T quad port Gbit NIC

2 x 500Gb Samsung 860 Evo (Raid 0 on Intel AHCI ports) - Running Server 2012 R2 Standard (Likely to switch this to Raid 1)

I've got 8 x HGST 6Tb Helium drives and these are the ones I'm considering a controller for. I agree the P420 isn't the pinnacle of controllers currently, it runs incredibly hot although from the note on the 71605 that's looking for a large amount of airflow as well.

The biggest workload is the security system, 8 cameras can cause me a lot of random non sequential writes (in the event that multiple cameras trigger simultaneously)

Plex isn't heavy use agreed, until it starts doing a media scan and the memory leak that's never been resolved kicks you in the ass, although on Windows this is less of an issue than it is on Freenas (11.3 appears to have fixed it.....maybe)

I'll price up the 71605 and associated replacement cabling, and have a think.

Has anyone got a picture of the Z820 Drive Cage backplane? Is it Mini-SAS or individual SAS/SATA??

Thanks

Lee

your current configuration of raid 0 on the z820 sata ports is pointless as one of your evo SSD's will saturate the bus

sata is limited via hardware to around 520MBs which as i said above a single evo is able to do adding a second drive in raid 0 will not really  increase the speed in your case however on a ASR-71605 raid 0 will see a speed increase, but it's usually only for sequential reads which in your (and most other cases) case is not  a major data usage

Take a look at my post down a bit in THIS  thread:

The rear end of the drive cages in the Z620 and Z820 are the same...... a "Blindmate" interface from Foxconn, regular combined SATA data/power connectors.  What I did to enable fully separate dual boot capability was find quality parts that let you tap into the Blindmate connector at the rear of the drive cage, and run high quality SATA data cables up to a switch mechanism.  The same parts might be of interest to you related to how to cleanly tap into the power/data ports built in there.

So, has anyone installed the 2080 TI in a Z440 successfully and what was required?

I have installed a Titan X (Pascal) in my Z440 without any problems some years ago. I have the standard 700W power supply. You may need to buy adapters if there are no supplied with the card. Read more here: Graphics Card PCI-E 6-Pin & 8-Pin Connectors Explained

Make sure that your computer has the 700W power supply. If you have you will have no problems.

The ATX standard for an ancillary PCIe power cable (usually used for graphics cards) is 75W max TDP.  These HP workstations are built to higher than ATX standards, and the graphics power cables for years in HP workstations each has been rated to 18A.

P = I x V..... Watts = 18A x 12VDC..... 216W is what each of those cables can supply.  This is why HP can provide a single 6-pin to dual 6-pin adapter and a single 6-pin to single 8-pin adapter.  You can do the math..... 75W also comes up from the PCIe slot.

Here is a label pic from a 700W Z440 power supply... the two video cables are outlined in red there.

Many thanks, exactly the info I needed. BTW, I think that all 6-core Xeons came with the 700 watt PSU. -Bill

Many thanks, that's the info I need. The PSU has to be removed to see the label but as I recall, all Z440 tower machines with the Xeon E5-1650 processor came with the 700 watt PSU. My machine has five SSDs and no hard drives so that should also put less load on the PSU as well.

My conclusion is that two 6-pin to 8-pin adapters will drive this card with power to spare. I plan to buy the Founders Edition if they are ever back in stock, definitely not an overclocked model.

UWF overlay buffer size exclusion and monitoring

Hi community out there,

In my case, client has 4 GB (3 GB used) ram and 1024 overlay buffer size, but as soon as client connected to VDI infrastructur to data center virtual machine by using horizon client auto script, windows memory and page file usage increases to 80 %.  I have 2 GB for system 1 GB for UWF overlay size so toatl 3 GB.
Which file or registry should we need to exclude for vdi connection process using horizon client which prevent user generated write in the virtual machine?

As we know if the file/ registry is excluded all the writes directly to drive not in the cache memory, so it stops filling overlay buffer size and how do we monitor large number of clients UWF overlay memory and see when needs to be rebooted.

Is it possible to integrate in check mk monitoring like the other things monitoring ?

How should we know clients overlay exhausted when we have large amount of clients and connected with user mode, without system went to in responsive at user side ?

Thanks in advance.

Can anyone help as to which drivers I need to get to fresh install windows ( tried both 7 and 8.1) on a xw6400 with a single hdd ( have tried both hdd and ssd to no success) on raid 0 . installation asks for drivers and does not see the hdd. Bios  is set to RAID/AHCI  but have tried other settings as well to no success. Have tried downloading various drivers but they are mostly in .exe form and cannot extract from them.

Thanks in advance

Hi:

See if the storage controller drivers that I zipped up and attached below work for you.

I attached the Intel Matrix storage controller drivers.

Unzip the files to their folder.

Get a USB flash drive and copy the file contents of the folder to your flash drive.

Boot from the W8.1 installation media and when you get to the part where you are asked to load drivers, browse to the USB flash drive, and if you check the box, it will only include the compatible driver.

Hopefully the files I attached are the right ones your PC is looking for.

Thanks Z440Roger.

Also for others thinking about installing a GeForce video card: if the Z440 has a "HP Z Turbo Drive" then the video card cannot exceed 2 slots. Many, especially the overclocked ones, take 2 1/2 to 3 slots. The Turbo Drive can be moved down from the X8 to the X16 slot but HP doesn't recommend it (I don't know why). I use the lower X16 slot of a PCIe SATA adapter for a 2TB Samsung Evo to store my Lightroom library and catalog. HP recommends the upper X16 slot for the video card.

The main  reason hp recommends a specific slot is speed.... the hp recomended slot connects directly to the pci-e lanes through the cpu and non hp recommended slots use the motherboards chipset pci-e lanes which can be slower

The 525W Z440 power supply appears to have zero PCIe supplemental 6-pin power cables (see picture below).  It is the Z420 power supply that has one (later versions).  From what is available on eBay it appears most of the parted out Z440 workstations had the 700W version.

525W Z440 power supply.jpg

The "D3" power plug at the bottom of this picture has only 2 wires and I'm not sure what that is for.....

You're very welcome.

Is the hard drive data connector straight into a SATA port on the motherboard, or is it hooked up to some other model SAS controller?
