Re: Crisis Recovery Jumper Z620 Z420 Z820 Revealed

Thank you both for the suggestions...

I did get it to flash red and beep, but probably not the way it's meant to in this procedure...

At first I tried with the PS/2 keyboard... No change; still the periodically flashing USB stick.

Then removed both the audio card and the video card. Plugged in an old simple card. Tried again, still the same...

After that removed CPU1 (rear one) and removed all but 1 of the memory modules. So now it has only CPU0 (front of the machine) and 1 8GB module in the lowest slot near CPU0 (as indicated in the memory load order image on the side panel.

Now I got it to flash and beep.... but only 5 times, indicating a 'Pre-video memory error' according to the service manual :(

After two sets of 5 flashes-and-beeps, the beeping stops but the flashing continues.

Also tried with adding a second DIMM in the top slot at CPU0; still the same. Reseated the first module, replaced the first module.. (Also with a different type; half of the memory is Nanya, other half is Micron (both HP branded))

Unfortunately I don't have a non-HT CPU. Got a Dell server laying around here that also had S2011 CPU's, but those are also E5-26xx 8-core ones... Maybe only a little slower then the 2690's from this machine...

swap cpu 0 with cpu 2 (again only run 1 cpu)

Do you mean swap the CPU in socket 0 with the one from socket 1? (So still running a single CPU in socket 0)

Or do you mean run with only a single CPU but in socket 1 instead of 0?

(Just to clarify :))

Hi wawood,

Thnaks for the information, by the way i already did the same thing what did you mentioned!

Now i am able to create one more drive whcih is called D in thin-client, actually i have created for pagefile configuration becuase C drive is protected with write filter and it doesn't work with while write filter enabled. Now created pagefile in newely created D drive and it works good. What's your opinion on this ?

Best Regards

IT'S ALIVE! :-)))

After swapping the CPU, I got 8 beeps/flashes, and it fully reset. (Switched off and back on after a couple of seconds)

Came back with a lot less fan speed.

At first nothing more happened, although I could hear it reboot (the slight chirp from the speaker when it warm-reboot)

Decided to switch it back off and swap out the temporary video card for my regular card (GTX1060) as I wasn't sure that old card did actually work.

Switched back on to full fan speed. Again the 8 beeps 'n flashes. Again the full reset to a much quieter machine. And now the beep from my monitor indicating a wake from standby...

HP logo; flashing rom!! ....... 100%

Removed the stick, system rebooted, and came back to a repeating 10 flashes/beeps.

Switched her off, put back the emergency jumper to the normal position, and put back the password jumper.

Power back on; BIOS screen version 3.94!

Thank you all so much!! I'd almost started shopping for a replacement mainboard :P

Now if you'll excuse me; I've got a CPU and a metric sh*tload of DIMMs to reinstall ;-)

(Hope that other CPU still works though...)

I'm new to a z620 and I was trying to understand the cabling. The only one I'm sure about is #30 going to the DVDR/W.

Where do the Sata3  #31 0 and 1 go? I gathered from top down 3.5  HDD are 0,1,2 but to what cabling?

the z620 sata ports do not really care what order a device is attached. the primary boot device can be on any port and work reguardless where the drive is located. you only need the pwr/data cables to be able to reach the device(s)

however, most people (and HP) start with the lowest number sata port for the DVD, then first (boot) drive followed by second/third (data ) drives

the HP service manual for the z620 has quite a bit of dtail on the system, you might want to read it

use this sites search box and search for z620 service manual , or google for z620 service manual

I had read the maintenance c_04205252.pdf, but that made me want to make sure I would be getting the 6Mbit sata on the drives I wanted to be as fast as possible, but I could not be sure where those were. I had hoped it would be in the 3.5 inch bays. I guess I was looking for some confirmation that was the case without trying to figure out how to trace the cabling on the side opposite the removable cover.mntncg_04205252_sata.jpg

Can I use a GTX Titan Z GFX Card ina HP Z600 Dual Xeon Workstation, and if yes, how?

Hello,

I am trying to use a NVidia Geforce GTX Titan Z with a HP Z600 Workstation (Dual Xeon X5670, 32GB Ram, 1 SSD, 1 HD).

In case you don't know this graphics card, this is a triple-slot monster with 12 GB Ram and the specs say it needs 375 Watts of power and 42 Ampere on the ....(I am not sure) +12 Volt line. (according to NVidia homepage info)

I am almost certain I cannot use the original power supply of my HP Z600 for that.

Can you help me and give me advice of how to properly give this monster enough power? What would you recommend - a second power supply just for that graphic card?

Has anyone done that? Is this possible? Or does the standard power supply work with this monster?

Please help....

all sata ports on the motherboard are 6gbps, so anything attached to the motherboard sata will by default be capable of 6gbps speeds,... assuming your storage device is also 6gbps capable

pci-e slots are pci-e 3.0

you people really need to stop trying to cram a v8 engine into a 69 beetle.

you can not use a NVidia Geforce GTX Titan Z with a HP Z600 Workstation (Dual Xeon X5670, 32GB Ram, 1 SSD, 1 HD)

replace the system with something that was designed for that card/power draw like a z820/z840 with the optional 1250 watt pwr supply

if you want to damage the card and the z600, by all means install it and then watch the magic blue smoke appear shortly after power on. the point i'm trying to make is that some things just do not play nicely with others and this is one of them

if a z8xx system is out of your price range then try looking at other systems, on ebay. a z420 with a power supply converter cable to use a normal ATX supply can be bought on amazon  just be aware that the power supply will most likely need to be in the 750/850 watt range for a single cpu system and 850 or more for a dual cpu system. and one last thing tier 1 pwr makers 750 watt supplies cost around 80/100 dollars....advoid the ebay no name $30.00 800 watt supplies as they are crap and will not actually be able to do 850 watts much less 300 watts.

According to the first jpg from that manual which is kind of hard to see unless enlarged, the first four SATA ports on the left are 3Mbits, the two on the right are 6Mbits and AHCI.

Embossed in the silver metal edge of the drive drawers is, vertically oriented, 0,1,2.  I use a fine tip Sharpie marker to fill those in so they are easy to see forever.

Bottom drawer bay is 0 if I recall correctly.  At the rear of each drawer recess are Foxconn "BlindMate" female receptacles so that when you slide the drawer in the male end of the drive meshes with that.  For drive 0, your SATA type III SSD drive, you want the far other plug end of that BlindMate-attached cable plugged into the bottom right SATA type III gray port.  They have labels at that plug end.  The intended plug is at the very bottom right corner of the motherboard.  A second SSD or HDD that ideally is SATA type III goes into the next bay up, bay 1, and the cable plug from that BlindMate receptacle goes into the next to the left gray port adjacent to the bottom right corner plug you already have populated.

A documents SATA type III or type II HDD or SSD goes into the top bay, bay 2.  The cable plug from that goes into the next higher numbered SATA port in the series.  Optical drive goes into the next.  Those SATA ports 2-5 are above, rather than along the bottom edge (which are SAS ports).

If you don't use a documents drive and drawers 1 and 2 are empty just plug optical drive into the second SATA type III port, gray, next to SATA port 0 (at the very bottom right corner).  The boot drive plug is ideally in the bottom right corner gray SATA port.  The other ports along the bottom edge of the motherboard are SAS.  You can see that swapping the plug ends around can get you a SATA boot SSD and two SAS or two SATA drives in RAID configuration using this approach.  I don't do RAID now that I have acccess to SATA III modern reliable SSDs for these workstations.

I don't do SAS either.  I usually only use a fast type III SSD at port 0 for our work computers.  I used to use a type II or III large HDD at SATA port 1 for a home documents drive, but now use type II or III larger SSD for that because I'm not a storage hog.  I have a need for speed.

If you use a 2.5" form factor SSD you need a HP adapter (654540-001 or -002) to shift the SATA male end leftward to mesh properly with the BlindMate receptacle.  Those are built for a 3.5" form factor drive, and the HP adapter noted is my favorite now.  Those have been posted in here about ad nauseum.  Made by Foxconn, for HP, not the "tool less" HP version, just as good, and reasonably priced.  Uses 4 M3 short screws... hence the "needs tool" version at 1/10th the cost.

eSATA.... I always have a passive adapter eSATA port open on every HP workstation's backplane from one of the last two SATA port plugs.... port 4 or port 5 (up above and to the left of the SATA III two gray ports).  I do a lot of Acronis image captures or clone building via that.  Very handy to us.

Have you ever tried to shrink C and create a swap partition with CMD?

DGroves: So, why, do you think, can I not insert another power supply with, say, 850 Watts in the HP Z600? Isn't there an adapter cable to do just that?

How's about using a seperate power supply for the graphics card, and the built-in one for the rest of the system?

there are quite a few reasions, ranging from the z600 was not designed to have a 350 watt thermal load from the video card (plus your other items cpu, ram, drives) while there may be pwr supply adapters i don't know or trust that they are rated for the load you are going to place on it, the power supply needs to be a quality unit, most likely a single rail design

or you may have issues

It's your equipment, feel free to do as you wish, but i personally would not risk a 800.00 card

as i pointed ot in my previous post just because you can do something,...... does not mean you should.
