@DGroves, @Skylarking,

Thank you for the answers thus far. I agree with your responses backed up by a white paper on HP's site.

I am, thus far, not happy with the solution provided by HP Elite support(David), who is sending me the 8.1 Pro restore media.  He claims there is a path to the free Windows 10 upgrade still out there somewhere!? That is an elusive answer, and I want to find a conclusive statement to back that up, from someone of authority.

Being that the reason I had to have a new board and processor installed because of the latest (since pulled) BIOS update for my system, rushed to release by Intel and provided by HP, I think they both are responsible for the costs, even my inconvenience, for this.  I am not done with this by any means.

To the OP..... google Windows 10 still free 2018.

Some added info:  Skylarking a long time ago helped me with a related project, and the following will reflect some of his input, and some of mine.

Some expensive programs are allowed to work only if the MAC address of the communicating workstation matches a centrally stored authorized MAC, and an even higher level of security is based on matching of the UUID of the workstation instead, or one we use requires match of both the UUID and the MAC.  Reportedly the central Microsoft W10 activation servers store the UUID of a W10-activated workstation and thus you can reinstall W10 of the same type without having to have access to your W10 license code ever again (your purchased code or your MS gift code).  Since that is based on the UUID if you get a new motherboard and try to reinstall W10 the central MS servers won't recognize the new motherboard unless it was programmed with the original motherboard's UUID.

When you get a brand new motherboard out of its HP-sealed wrapper the chassis serial number comes starting with a C, and the tech (or you if you know what you are doing) get one shot to enter the critical values.  After that they can't be changed.  So, if you are using one of the highly secure type of programs noted above you'd want to capture that info ahead of time, and keep it in your files.  A HP FSE might program all but the chassis serial number by mistake, I believe, but you can fix that to match what is on the labels of your box using the access method below.

You can get to what Skylarking is talking about by F10 into BIOS, tab over to the Security tab, arrow down to System IDs so it is highlighted, and then use CTRL + A.  That does not need to be hit simultaneously... use the usual pattern of CTRL first and then A immediately after while still holding down CTRL.  Then lift up and hit ENTER.  You'll see more than you see usually inside System IDs.  Copy that, and keep for if you ever need to "clone" these settings with a brand new motherboard.

From what I have seen you can change the chassis serial number as often as you wish and that will stick, but the other stuff won't after the first time.

Thanks,

I did call Microsoft support and allowed them to take over my desktop and reset my license. By going back in and looking at ProduKey it is a bit of a hack.

I'm sorry I didn't get the name of the MS Tech to give a shout out to.

@SDH,

Thanks for this further info.  I have gone in and poked around with the system ids. I did not and as far as I can recall,  see the service tech alter the UUID but did set the serial number.  I had to set the Product Id and Model myself.

The sub-contractor they did send out admitted to me that he was a hardware specialist rather than an HP specialist, so I don't fault him.

Have an HPz200, replaced standard 320 PSU with EVGA 850 BQ and now the system won't startup

This is the PC in question: https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c02027649

16GB Ram

Intel Core i3-540 3.06 GHz, 73 W, 4MB cache, 1333 memory, Dual-Core, HT

320w PSU

Came with AMD firepro GPU but I will be replacing that with a bit newer model.

It was working before I decided to try and give the system a little extra oomph.

Mainly I just wanted to put in a new gpu, probably try to upgrade the cpu a little later.

I took out the older 320w PSU, and I happened to have an EVGA 850w BQ semi-modular psu on hand. Got it fit in there and connected it to the Sata CD drive and HDD, connected the cpu cable, connected the motherboard cable, and connected the GPU vga cable. Nothing happens when you try to turn it on.

No lights up front, no fans spinning, no green light on mobo. Nothing.

I have tried replacing ram and/or leaving one stick in.

Replaced CMOS battery.

Tested PSU.

Checked wiring from power button to panel on mobo.

Unplugged everything but the mobo and cpu.

The only difference I can see, is that on the 20+4 pin connector from the PSU, there are no connectors in the 20th hole. Whereas the old PSU that I took out does have something in the 20th hole. Is that the issue? Is there anyway to use this PSU? The man reason is that the new gpu requires 6pin vga cable to power it (whereas the firepro did not) and the old PSU does not have a 6 pin vga cable and it is not modular.

New E240c monitors will not power up

Just purchased 4 monitors E240C models. Went to power them on and two out of the 4 will not come on. They simply just blink the power button led which is white. Tried everything I can think of to get them to come on. Used both display cords VGA and DV with no change in results. Pressing the menu button has not effect. Think that they are DOA out of the box.

Also, tried to unplug and hold down the power button for over a minute and then plug back in while holding the power button, but no effect.

Anyone have any ideas? I've had several of these model and have not had any trouble with then until now.

the hp z2xx series workstations do not use a standard ATX power supply they use a custom supply with a 20 pin connector

instead of the 24 pin one. also the voltages on each pin does not follow the ATX standard

also note that the HD SATA power comes off of the motherboard using a 4 pin to sata cable as i recall

the reasion it will not turn on is because you are applying the wrong voltages to the motherboard pins and  causing a direct short to the system. the power supply is detecting the short and engaging the self protection shutdown circuits

connecting the wrong supply can damage both the motherboard and the power supply

you may be able to make or buy a power adapter harness that reroutes the pins to the order the motherboard expects

i would check the HP service manual which lists the pinout and see if the 200/210/240 systems use the same pinouts

then search ebay for a adapter

not going to happen,...... the hp z420/620/820 systems do not support booting from nvme they only support boot from SATA SSD

they will however access the nvme ssd as a data drive (win 7 needs special drivers) win 8 and up have builtin driver support

some people have used a special boot loader method to force a load of the missing nvme driver code before then xfering control back to the windows bootloader

google boot nvme on ami bios win raid as keywords if you wish to try this method

first off this is a older system circa mid 2007 as such intel has no plans to release updated microcode for cpu's of this generation. and system venders no longer provide any support for systems this old.

next, hp has on several ocasions release updated cpu microcode to support newer cpu's  on systems this microde only updates the cpu support in most cases and as such simply adds the new microcode to the existing bios

if at a later date hp then releases a newer bios for that system that fixes/adds enhcancments to the system via the newer bios, if will by default include the previous microde updates released previously

to recap:

there is no need to install the microcode update and then a newer bios update, since the newer bios by default will allready have  the latest microcode

Kevin,

Wanted to get back to you about the google search topic I gave you..... the upgrade to W10Pro64 still works fine today if the current W7Pro64/W8Pro64 is activated and proper.  There is still also another method if you use assistance as you'll see.

Why, you ask, can this still be?

I'm typing this from a HP workstation just upgraded today to W10Pro64 from an official install from my HP OEM COA W7Pro64SP1 installer DVD, and the install now has been upgraded without cost to W10Pro64 - without trickery or hassle.  The answer is that it is a win-win-win for MS, HP and us.

MS wants as many of us on W10 as possible, HP wants that too and knows its base will upgrade later when ready to upgrade hardware, and we all want flexibility still on the issue of W7 vs W10 using our current hardware.  There still is a MS income stream from upgrading by those who don't read up on the issue.  Actually, if you do some reading you'll see that the upgrade fees are small potatoes to MS in the big picture.

My current new W10Pro64 install on this workstation is now activated with a digital license, which means later when I'm really ready to shift to W10Pro64 my workstation's UUID is forever registered centrally with MS as W10Pro64 activated, and I'll not need to enter any codes during a re-install of W10.

I'll add my usual sticker to the back of this workstation reminding me that it is W10Pro activated with MS centrally, and keep using my W7Pro64 build for now (recloned back on as of today).  I have an Acronis clone of my optimized W7Pro64 build that I use...... but I am liking W10Pro64 more and more.

Your SFF is too short.... the Q2000 is a full height  card but the SFF only accepts the shorter cards, with a short backplane adapter plate.

We use lots of the Q2000 and Q2000 cards.... like both of them a lot, but they are not short enough for your box.

My favorite alternative for the SFF height workstations is the Quadro K600, or K620 (more expensive and not really faster).  Go on eBay and take a look.

With W7Pro64 you can do WEI speed testing.  The Quadro 600 gives 2D/3D of 6.6/6.6, while the K600 gives 6.8/6.8.

A 0.2 jump in performance is worth getting, and the Quadro K620 gives the same 6.8/6.8 performance with a bit more wattage used and more VRAM (2GB versus 1).

I'd buy the K600, personally, unless you really need the higher VRAM..... and make sure to get one with the SFF short plate on its butt end.  Check on eBay to see how the two plates look different.  And, you'll get very close to Q2000/Q2000D performance.

ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE,...

for instance it's possible you will tell us what model computer you have

and it's possible that when we know that ,...someone  will be able to answer your question

as it stands, we don't know if it's a laptop, a all in one, a sff, mini tower,

so it's not possible to  answer your question as it stands

As per the info on the MS website, the free upgrade offer for assistive technology users to WIn10 supposedly ended at the end of 2017: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/accessibility/windows10upgrade

It is possible that if someone still has the installer for the upgrade such an upgrade could still be run but officially at least it seems that this path is no longer being offered.

From what I recall Microsoft did not want to keep this path open indefinietly since it was subject to abuse -  in practise it was possible to install Windows 7, activate it with 'less than official' tools and then trigger the upgrade to WIndows 10, the result of which was for all intents and purposes a 'legal' fully functional and activated Win 10. registered on the MS servers.

HP Touchsmart - DPS 200PB-171 A Pinout needed

I have a HP Touchscreen that belongs to a customer.  I believe the power supply has gone out and have already placed an order for a new.  I decided to do some reasearch and test the pins at home and nothing seems to be the correct voltage.

I cannot find a pinout anywhere on the web.  It is a non standard 18 pin setup.1-4 are yellow, 5+6 are blank, 7-8 are black, followed by green then purple. 9-13 are black, then grey, black, blue and then pin 18 is black.

So far the voltage readouts are all around 3.5 volts, nothing registers 12 and I belive one pair measured 5.  I need to know if this is bad so I can cancle my order and save the client and myself some time.  The order can be returned, I made sure of that but I am 90 percent positive its a bad unit.  The strange thing is when I removed it and plugged it in the green status light came on.  Now I am neven more curios and have spent literally hours searching for a 18 pin hp pinout, the closest Ive come does not even have the same layout and is different colors for different pins.

Please help.
