Re: Z820 Cyclic reboot

I'll try another CPU in a few days. But current Xeon E5-2690 is also Sandy bridge one. So... this looks more like faulty motherboard, yep?

Re: Z420 CPU fan not increasing under load

After some further troubleshooting, I believe I've narrowed down the cause of this with some interesting and concerning results. Can anyone else confirm these findings?

BIOS versions 03.91 through 03.94: when running the CPU at 100% load with AIDA64 stability test or another stress test suite, the clock speed/voltage shifts down when the processor hits the 130W max rated TDP, and the CPU fan spins up when the processor hits 80*C, peaking briefly around 82-83*C but never exceeding that (with Idle Fan Speed set to its lowest setting in order to observe fan speed increase in HP Performance Advisor).

BIOS versions 03.95 and 03.96: Performing the same stress test shows that the processor's voltage and clock speed DO NOT shift down when the processor hits 130W TDP, quickly exceeding the thermal threshold without the fan properly ramping at 80*C to cool it. This issue becomes much more apparent if you choose to overclock the processor using Intel's Extreme Tuning Utility due to the increased voltage that is being applied, however I can confirm that this behavior is also present when the system is not overclocked, however it takes a little while longer for it to become apparent.

Example:

03.95/03.96: CPU set to 42x multiplier in XTU for all 6 cores registers 1.336V in HWMonitor with a clock speed of 4190 MHz. When running AIDA64 and the CPU hits 100% load, the clock speed will remain at 4190 MHz on all 6 cores up to 1.356V, and the temperatures quickly exceed 80*C until the system shuts itself off.

03.94 and below: CPU set to 42x multiplier in XTU for all 6 cores registers 1.336V in HWMonitor with a clock speed of 4190 MHz. When running AIDA64 and the CPU hits 100% load, the clock speed almost immediately drops to 3790 MHz across all 6 cores with the voltage at 1.211V and the fans ramp up at 80*C, holding the temperature steady within 2-3*C of that mark.

As per the release notes for the last two BIOS revisions (listed below), did Intel's microcode update or something in HP's BIOS change how the motherboard handles it's voltage regulation / power control? For those who are pushing their systems with heavy workloads and for those who have overclocked their machines (as many have begun to do), this new behavior is especially concerning as this will lead to a shortened lifespan of an already aging system.

Release notes for affected BIOS revisions:

03.96:
Fix and enhancements:

-Includes enhancements to mitigate security vulnerabilities CVE-2019-0124, CVE-2019-0151, and CVE-2019-0184.
-HP strongly recommends promptly transitioning to this updated BIOS version.
-Updates Intel TXT BIOS ACM to v2.4.
-Updates Intel TXT SINIT ACM to v2.5.

03.95:
Fix and enhancements:

- Updates Intel processor microcode to 0x42E for Ivy Bridge-EP processors, 0x718 for Sandy Bridge-EP C2/M1 processors and 0x61F for Sandy Bridge-EP C1/M0 processors.
- Includes enhancement to mitigate CVE-2018-12126, CVE-2018-12127, CVE-2018-12130 and CVE-2019-11091.

If you're not able to get the system to boot into Crisis Recovery mode, then I would assume at this point based on your troubleshooting steps that the motherboard has likely failed -- possibly the CPU, but that seems less likely.

The original board that came in the Z420 (v2) I currently have failed last year in a somewhat similar fashion, although it would ramp the fans up full speed for ~5-10 seconds and then power off but not in a loop, however like yours there were no red lights indicating an issue. The first few times this happened I was able to get into Crisis Recovery and reflash it back to life but it eventually died.

To OP:

I believe you meant to type X5675, not X3675 in your latest post.  Note that those X5675 processors work fine in the Z600 v2 workstations, and you can run either 1 or 2 of them.  We run two because they are so inexpensive now, and they only need the 70W common inexpensive Z600 heatsink/fan.

I can confirm that the X5690 will NOT work on the Z600.  It will work in the Z400, as an undocumented but confirmed compatible processor for that workstation.  Before we started using the Z420 v2 workstations I loaded all our Z400 v2 workstations with the X5690 processor.  Works great in that box.

So, don't buy a X5690 for your Z600 v2 and do buy two X5675 processors instead.  Use the regular cheap heatsink/fan because that is all you need.

Ah yes, i meant the x5675!

Thanks for the clarification, I've decided that i will take 2x x5675 for a decent Folding at home machine and light gaming.

Dan.... happy to help.  Wanted to give you a bit more info:

In all of my experience with the Z400 v2 and Z600 v2 I've found that the official HP processors in the late QuickSpecs for these two boxes work fine.  As I noted the X5690 was never officially certified for the Z400 v2 but it has worked every time.  I used to think it was the best for that Z400 workstation.  I did try it in multiple Z600 v2 workstations as a single processor but never succeeded.

I've recently learned that the W3690 that is officially certified for the Z400 v2 actually likely is the better choice for that box.  This is because it has an unlocked multiplier whereas the X5690 does not.  Thus, it can be overclocked with the Intel XTU utility that Bambi and Brian use so successfully as described in their posts.  There is another utility for doing this type of overclocking, ThrottleStop, which is well respected also.  Here is a YouTube video on that, and I'll experiment with it a bit on the Z420 v2 and Z620 v2 boxes.  HERE  is a link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MewSdpzQVjU

He assumes you know to click "Turn On" at the bottom for testing.  This utility is being supported by the author quite well, and is W10 compatible, and has no cost.

I still think your current plan is best, but if you happen to have one of those processors around you might like to try it in your Z600 v2 as a single processor, overclock it, and report back.

The X5675 PassMark average CPU score is 6386 if one and 11797 if two.  W3690 is 7185 without overclocking, and X5790 is 6800 if only one is being used.  The dual QPI links in the X5690 that let you run two in the Z800 cost you some speed, as you can see.

A bit related..... for those who want to load in a more modern video card with need for an 8-pin PCIe supplemental power adapter the use of adapters using 15-pin SATA power feed in is discouraged in favor of the good old 4-pin Molex power feeds, with a good adapter as shown below.  There are a lot of cheap substandard ones out there... here is an A+ version which I have clarified for what is going on.  You'd want to use 4-pin Molex feeds from two different power cable sets coming out of the HP power supply if possible:

slow boot when internal hard drive of 10TB is installed

I got a brand new HP Z4G4 workstation (model 9VD53UT), pre-installed with 8gb RAM, and Win 10 pro on an M.2 boot drive. Upon starting up this pc, I have installed an ASUS Geforce RTX 2070  with 8GB graphic card and 32GB RAm and a WD 4TB data drive. It boot up in less than 30 sec. Everything is working as expected. The system is intended to be used for video editing with Adobe Premier CC.

Operating System: Windows 10 Pro 64-bit (10.0, Build 18363) (18362.19h1_release.190318-1202)
Language: English (Regional Setting: English)
System Manufacturer: HP
System Model: HP Z4 G4 Workstation
BIOS: P62 v02.56 (type: UEFI)
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-10900X CPU @ 3.70GHz (20 CPUs), ~3.7GHz
Memory: 32768MB RAM
Available OS Memory: 32496MB RAM
Page File: 7957MB used, 40537MB available
Windows Dir: C:\windows
DirectX Version: DirectX 12

Problem arises when I add another internal WD Ultrastar SATA drive 10TB HelioSeal.

The system would take more than 10 min to boot up. It keeps spinning the drive while booting up.

I have tried to disable all other drive except M.2  on BIOS boot order, to no avail.

Everything else including BIOS are current.

Please help if you have any idea to solve this problem.

Note: I have contacted:

- HP support but was refused due to the drive is a third party drive.

- WD support was also refused suggesting the HP BIOS is not supporting higher capacity drive. No hard drive firmware update is available.

Another interesting note:

Thinking the new WD 10Tb drive might be defected, I pulled it out and place it in a HP SFF destop with a SSD boot drive,  i7 CPU, 8 GB RAM. It was recognized and boot quickly, no problem.

Benchmark the drive using CrystalDiskMark, yielded Read/Write throughput 262/260 Mb/s.

So what cause very slow boot time with this workstation. Any help or guidance  is very much appreciated.

I have no answers yet, but some questions:

Where does it hang? BIOS, or Windows? Have you increased the levels of reporting in BIOS/Windows? (Those messages can, at times, be helpful.)

What happens when you boot up with the 4TB disconnected, and the 10GB connected (to the same port if it too is SATA)?

Quite an  interesting and informative post you've put together. I do overclock my E5-1680 v2 up to 4.7GHz in my Z620 but I'm still running BIOS version 3.91. After other forum members had reported a slight slow down in system performance as a result of upgrading the BIOS to v3.92, I decided to stick with v3.91.

"Where does it hang? BIOS, or Windows? Have you increased the levels of reporting in BIOS/Windows? (Those messages can, at times, be helpful.)"

The system did not hang, HP Sure Start screen loaded with timer keep rolling so I assume Windows was booting up. But there is a brief moment, the screen went blue prior to windows user login screen.

Regarding the increase the level of reporting:

I do not know how to increase level of reporting. Do you mean ENABLE BOOT LOGGING ?  The resulted log is partially as follows:

BOOTLOG_LOADED \SystemRoot\System32\Drivers\Beep.SYS
BOOTLOG_LOADED \SystemRoot\System32\drivers\dxgkrnl.sys
BOOTLOG_NOT_LOADED \SystemRoot\System32\drivers\dxgkrnl.sys
BOOTLOG_LOADED \SystemRoot\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\ basicdisplay.inf_amd64_307898c750ba9e44\BasicDisplay.sys
BOOTLOG_NOT_LOADED \SystemRoot\System32\drivers\dxgkrnl.sys
BOOTLOG_LOADED \SystemRoot\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\          basicrender.inf_amd64_ba2a8de08ea0d469\BasicRender.sys
BOOTLOG_LOADED \SystemRoot\System32\Drivers\Npfs.SYS
BOOTLOG_LOADED \SystemRoot\System32\Drivers\Msfs.SYS
BOOTLOG_LOADED \SystemRoot\system32\DRIVERS\tdx.sys

dxgkrnl.sys is not loaded >> Does the graphics card cause the problem ?

"What happens when you boot up with the 4TB disconnected, and the 10GB connected (to the same port if it too is SATA)?"

The drives of 4tb and 10tb are all SATA.

With same SATA port, same cable, 4tb drive, the system boots up in less than 30sec.

Whereas swapping it with  the 10tb, it take over 10 min spinning the drive before sucessfully boot up.

I have tried all sort of combinations to boot the system, both at same time on SATA 0 to 5, swapping cables, changing SATA port, changing new SATA cables, etc... but to no avail.

I do appreciate your posting/replying to this post.
