It sounds like you might be overloading the PSU, or the PSU itself may have a fault, (or another system component, e.g. graphics card, etc.)

According to the HP Z620 Maintenance and Service Guide;-

Symptom

Red Power LED blinks four times, once every second, followed by a two-second pause. Four beeps.

Possible Cause
Power failure (power supply is overloaded).

Recommended Action

CAUTION: Internal components might be powered even when the computer is off.  To prevent damage, disconnect the computer power cord before you remove a component.
1. Open the access panel and ensure that all power connections are secure on the system board.
2. Check if a device is causing the problem by removing all attached devices (such as hard, diskette, or optical disk drives, and expansion cards.) Power on the computer. If the system enters the POST, power off and replace one device at a time; repeat this procedure until failure occurs. Replace the device that is causing the failure. Continue adding devices one at a time to ensure all devices are functioning properly.

I recommend you check for any loose connectors and also remove and re-seat any PCIe cards and the RAM modules. Try testing the system with a minimum specification, i.e. single CPU, 1 stick of RAM, OS drive and a GPU. You can also test the PSU via the BIST (Built-In-Self-Test).

To check the power supply functionality.
a. Disconnect the AC power.
b. HP Z820 Workstation only — Remove the power supply from the chassis. All other workstations, unplug cables connected to system board.
c. Plug in AC power.
● If the power supply fan spins and the BIST LED illuminates, the power supply is good.
● If the power supply fan does not spin or the LED does not illuminate, replace the power supply.

NOTE: The LED is only visible from the rear of the PSU.

here's a link that shows the 400 watt supply dimensions, again as i recall this unit is to large to fit your system however i could be wrong so measure your supply

PSU For HP 86 89 280 480 400 600 800G3 G4 G5 400W Power Supply PA-3401-1HA 942332-001 PA-3401-1

L=16cm w=9.5cm h=7.3cm

https://www.aliexpress.com/i/4000638336459.html

you will also need to check the pinout of the 6 pin connector (p2) to confirm it matches your pinout

this is why i recommend the  silverstone supply and the adapter, more wattage and you know the pinout is correct

document Z420 (v2 bootblock, v3.96 bios) compatibility with 32 Gb lrdimms (hint: it fails)

This is just to document that my Z420 (bios 3.96, v2 bootblock) doesn't like 32 Gb lrdimms. It doesn't boot with 8, with 4 or even with 2 - generating the 'five beeps' of dislike every time.

It works fine with other memory. So, if you're googling if your 664693-001 is compatible with a Z420, proceed with caution - it doesn't work in mine. This is HP 32GB 4Rx4 PC3L-10600L memory, that works just fine in a very cheap Chinese Huananzhi X79 motherboard, by the way (but that has only 4 slots, alas).

When referring to 'HP factory', it is worth considering the very wide meaning of the term 'HP factory'.

Two examples:

1. An official document issued by the Bureau of Indian Standards (dated 16-09-2016)

https://www8.hp.com/h20195/v2/GetPDF.aspx/c06678549.pdf

defines Foxconn CZ, S.R.O. in the Czech Republic as 'Manufacturing Unit' of a Workstation product Brand HP.

2. On the shipment label on the package that contained my HP Z820 workstation, that I ordered in year 2012 from local HP representatives, it was printed: Hewlett Packard    C/O Foxconn CZ s.r.o.   U Zamecku 27   Pardubice, 532 01   CZ

Inside many brands of desktop computers and workstations, a considerable number of electronic devices, PCB's, cable assemblies and whatnot are manufactured by subcontractors including Foxconn, and the above examples indicate that Foxconn may also take a major part in assembling complete computer products.

The CPU is undoubtedly manufactured by Intel, so it is not necessary to expect it to be manufactured by the HP factory.

However It is important to note that design, selection of components and then testing of the product (during manufacturing stages and final acceptance tests of complete products) are done by HP .

Z840 CPU upgrade ?

What are the fastest and most powerful CPU’s you can put in an HP Z840 ?

Pair of Xeon CPU’s

Or

Can you provide a lists of compatible CPU’s ?

Alexanderherman,

To start off:

1. What is the designation of the current processors ?

2. What are first and second priority applications?

Which will inform the choice between:

A_ Powerful = Core count (= total clock cycles per unit time)

B_ Fastest = Single Thread performance  ( = highest clock speed)

There are good compromise CPU's that have both quite a lot of cores  e.g. 14-18 and a healthy top clock speed : e.g. 3.6.-3.8GHz

3.  How much RAM?

and:

4. What is the boot drive?

Jurriaank,

A quick survey of the z420 specification reveals that the memory configuration is:

1.  "DDR3, UDIMM (Unbuffered), ECC"

__ A.  However,  ECC Registered also works. See below. The  z420 motherboard appears to be extremely similar to  z620 which as a potentially dual processor system must use ECC registered. The z420 differs in that the second processor riser socket is not installed even though the traces and installation points are still visible.

2. "Maximum Memory Supported  _ Supports up to 64GB"

Also, consider:

1.  That PC3L-10600L is running at 1333MHz whereas the z420 V2 may use up to 1866MHz

2.  This is anecdotal, but from results, either the the z-X20 BIOS and/or the memory controller apparently does not like load reduced RAM. In a couple of tries, it returned unpredictable memory training errors.

I strongly recommend using HP part no. labelled memory. I would also that I have never noticed that the use of registered memory has any performance deficit as compared to unbuffered.

Hp Development Company, L.P. - Extension - 8.10.1.1 Windows Update?

$

Microsoft Windows Update installed this unexpected update on to my Windows 10 Pro HP Z2 Tower G4 Workstation... I paused updates... but it installed itself anyway...

It's listed in update history as:

--------------------

Driver Updates (1)

Hp Development Company, L.P. - Extension - 8.10.1.1

Successfully installed on 31/08/2020

--------------------

..and can't be uninstalled.

It not listed anywhere in Windows update catalog,  or anywhere in HP...

HP Workstation Support can't find this update listed anywhere either...

Anybody have any information on this extension update? (Only a bit paranoid because it coincided with a suspicious attempted file download from a from a browser).

Edit: Then later support contacted me to say they believed the update might be something to do with: HP Manageability Integration Kit (MIK) for Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager, bust sounded very vague.

There are many models in the Pavilion x360 series, so without the complete model number, a generic help answer would be to start with running the diagnostics to verify if the hard drive has failed.

To run the Diagnostics routine, start tapping the Esc key and then press the start button.
Keep tapping the Esc key until a popup menu shows. Then pick Diagnostics from that popup menu, F2.
Report back with the results.

Z820 Cyclic reboot

$
0

Hello.

I have Z820 with one 2690 Xeon CPU. It ran into cyclic reboot with no POST or any beeps.

1. I've just shutdown it few days ago.

2. Then I've turned it on next day. It turned on - no POST screen, no beeps, fans at normal speed, blue power light. Then it shut down after a while, stayed off for 5 seconds and then turned itself on again with the same result (goining to reboot after a while).

I've tried:

- disconnecting and reconnecting power cord

- clearing cmos

- removing the battery

- disconnecting all the drives

- removing all memory modules except one in the DIMM1

- rotating memory modules in DIMM1

- rotating all of the memory modules

- removing the GPU

- removing all of the memory modules

All the same. Cyclic reboot:

- about 25 seconds after power on with no POST or any beeps, blue power light;

- kinda "auto shutdown"

- 5 seconds stays off

- automatically powers on;

Well, I've tried entering Crisis Recovery with JP15, but no luck with two different flash drives and with DVD with bin file. I cant' even get red light and beeps. JP15 is in 2-3 position, but power light is still blue and no beeps.

I don't know should I enter Crisis recovery in this case or not, I've just tried it. May be this is another kind of problem.

So main question is: does cyclic reboot looks like something I can deal with BIOS and crisis recovery with? Or is it another kind of problem?

P.S. I've tried entering crisis recovery with various hardware combinations and with nearly no additional hardware, and with different formatting options for flash drives.

That post is why I thought it would work. The same memory works perfectly in my Z620 as well, by the way.

Have you tried testing the PSU via the BIST (Built-In-Self-Test):-

To check the power supply functionality.
a. Disconnect the AC power.
b. HP Z820 Workstation only — Remove the power supply from the chassis. All other workstations, unplug cables connected to system board.
c. Plug in AC power.
● If the power supply fan spins and the BIST LED illuminates, the power supply is good.
● If the power supply fan does not spin or the BIST LED does not illuminate, replace the power supply.

NOTE: The LED might only be visible from the rear of the PSU.

Are the cards installed correctly?

Z820 GPU 2.JPG

According to Note 1 at the base of the table, the Quadro cards should be installed in slots 2 and 4. The Tesla card should be installed in slot 6.

Obviously the above suggestion won't solve your thermal problems.

P.S. I tried using an old Tesla M2090 (server card) in my Z620 with a Quadro K4200, initially with the stock heatpipe/vane cooler, (i.e. No fan). Yes, I could boot the computer and run Windows fine, but as soon as any load was applied to the M2090, (e.g. CUDA rendering), the Z620 would reboot. I added an Alphacool waterblock and custom cooling and the M2090 ran great, even under 100% load over 2 days. I no longer have the M2090 installed as I now have a Quadro P2000 and watercooled GTX 1080 ti installed in my Z620.

EliteDesk 800 minis and TPM modules?

$

Hi,

I'm trying to determine if the EliteDesk 800 G1, G2 and/or G3 desktops in the mini form factor have TPM modules.  I was looking over specs on line but can't seem to find a reference to it, so I'm not sure if that's because they don't have it or if it is just an over sight.

Any idea how I can find this out?  Is there somewhere in the system that would show me?  Most of these systems are still running Windows 7, if that matters for the answer.

Thanks in advance!
