Re: Zx20 Workstations & NVIDIA Quadro compatibility

BambiBoomZ,

There's two discussions here:

  1. how to choose best GPU for your use and budget, and
  2. HP''s designation of "compatible" GPU's for their workstations

On the first point, I agree with everything you post -- particularly how valuable it is to use PassMark GPU benchmark results in determining cost/performance benefits. The GD3 results here, http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html, nicely highlight how GeForce GTX cards can easily outperform Quadros at a huge cost savings to boot. With Maya's Viewport 2.0 working well with GeForce GTX cards, I am considering the  consumer GeForce GTX 1080, as well as the Quadro P5000, which is outperforming the M6000 for a considerable cost savings. And you make a great point about the expected P4000 price/performance benefits.

....and that brings me back to the second and original point: my frustration with HP's designation of Quadro "compatibility."  While my Z820 is no longer "current," my HP Care Pack for Next Business Day Onsite Support is still very much active and has value to me. If I buy a "compatible" HP branded Quadro card for my workstation it will be covered under my HP Care Pack for as long as I keep it current.

Not only are there no HP GeForce GTX cards certified for the workstations (OK, GTX's aren't for "professionals"), but I don't believe HP has certified any NVIDIA Pascal GPU Quadros for even their current workstations, much less the Z820. For the HP Z820 workstation specifically, only HP branded NVIDIA Kepler cards (and not even the K5200) are certified which is, IMHO, is not supporting my investment.

What would satisfy me, and "Accept as Solution" is if a HP Quality Engineer or HP employee would post that if I buy an HP branded Quadro card to install in my covered Z820, that HP would support that card under my HP Care Pack warranty.
