Re: HP power supply

This took me by surprise, because I used Dell's product with identical form factor without this restriction. I could understand if this was a laptop and optimal battery charging was required.

I'm aware of small ARM CPU computers and they are no match when high computing power needed.

And I already have the HP.

Servus CannaraX,

There has been a noticeable trend of problems with AMD GPU drivers and VBIOS that vary with the system in which it is installed.  For example:

https://community.amd.com/thread/222850

It appears AMD often issues new drivers  and BIOS in rapid succession after product release. I've never reflashed a GPU BIOS, but that would seem a logical first step, if only to eliminate it as possibility. As with any BIOS, this has to be done very carefully, as recovery from a misflashed BIOS may ruin the card or require it be sent to a service center. If the RX 580 has a dual BIOS switch that will allow for problems. Check AMD for a new driver as well in case there has been an update since downloading last time.

The RX580 is certainly used in z420's. There are 27 HP z420 / RX 580 results in Passmarks baselines. The performance is quite good, similar to a GTX 1060, with the best 3D result = 10121 on an E5-1650 v2 system overclocked to 4.2GHz.

Let us know what you find out.  Viel Glueck.

Perhaps we are looking at different items when looking at a HP Z820.  When I looked for that PC model, it came up as a desktop workstation, which has 5.25" drive bays.  That can use a normal 5.25 DVD/Bluray drive.

Slim Bluray drives are usually not used for a desktop unit.

Please post a link for the item the inquiry is for, so we are looking at the same thing.

Probably because the slim DVD/BD reader/writer were introduced for the ZX40 series. For the Z820 you can however buy this: https://www.asus.com/us/Optical-Drives-Storage/BW16D1HT

I use one in my Z440 and used it in my Z800 as well until i bought my Z440. It´s a standard 3,5 inch and often aviable in bulk to buy just the burner without third party software. I use ImgBurn instead.

Just so you are not confused.  misstated.  it will accept a standard 5.25" drive.  Most any model/brand will work as long as you have an empty drive bay, and spare SATA and power leads.

I had the same issue and called tech support.   You do this on your own through the local policy of the thin client.  I wish I had kept notes but he was rattling it off too fast that all I could do was follow.  But through the computer settings in local policy you should be able to open it to better be able to configure your user accounts.  Or call tech support and mention this.

Fan Replacements for HP xw8400 Workstations

I have several older HP xw8400 Workstations still in use. I wanted to see if there was anything I can do to easily reduce the fan and system noise on these workstations.

The workstations still have their original fans installed in each system. They're each running with 16 gb of ram (8gb x 2). One computer has an SSD and 2 2tb drives. The noisier computer has an SSD (in the bottom fifth bay) and 4 2tb drives.

Please provide links to any recommended parts (and install instructions if possible.).

Could be that it was asking for more than one driver. Oh well stuck with win10. It's just that win10 grow and grow every so often - those ridiculous apps! In the end you need a main frame (do they still exist ) just to run "Office" LOL. Still a xw6400 with 16G ram is beautiful - even with win10

I don't believe it needs more than one driver,

I may need a different one, but I would have no idea which one it could be-especially since W7 identified the storage controller driver that was supposed to work.

Since W10 is working, I think that is the best option anyway, despite its extra apps.

You will have the longest OS support for W10.

I believe that W8.1 support will end in 2023.

OK.  Updated the BIOS.  Done with that.

Tried doing all the updates at once and they did not all go the first time.  (These were the updates in campdublanc's list for the Z820 - modified per DGroves comments since I have a z620.)

Why did they not all go through?  I concluded the 'reset to factory defaults' caused the AMT to be enabled, and so on for the other BIOS updates.  So I did the 'reset to factory defaults' by itself - did a default save.  Turned off the computer.   Powered it back on, and entered BIOS a second time.  Then I did the other updates - and did a save changes.

I then turned off the computer; the powered it back on, and entered BIOS a third time to ensure all the second pass updates were still there.  They were.

So it appears I am good to go on the BIOS updates.

Got the z620 to see my NVMe card (plugged into a PCIe slot), but not without some flak.

I turned off the computer, then unplugged it, so I could seat my PCIe Adapter card into a PCIe slot.   My Samsung 970 EVO PLUS card was mounted onto the PCIe Adapter.   I then plugged the computer in and turned it on.

Computer went past BIOS and into Windows 10 briefly, then went back to the 'hp Logo' black setup screen.  Then the computer beeped and I got the message:

  928

  Fatal PCIe error

  PCIe error detected Slot 5

 Malformed TLP.

At the bottom of the black screen, in blue, was this:  F1 Boot.

Stared at this, looked up the 928 error on the Internet, and thought about it for a bit.  I then tapped my F1 Key, thinking what the heck, it shoudln't hurt anything, let's see where might this go.   My z620 then went through the IPL process one more time and this time it got to my Windows 10 desktop.

Once in the Windows 10 desktop, I pulled up my System Information Window.  I went to Components->Storage->Disks.  In there it showed as one of the Disk Drive Models, a 'Samsung SSD 970 EVO Plus 500GB'.  Just to make sure, I went to the Disk Manager - it showed up there also (my Disk 2) and asked if I wanted this to be an MBR or GPT disk.  I backed out w/o doing anything.  I then did a restart, and this worked also - still could see the 970 EVO Plus.  Do it looks like I am ready to install the OS.

I cannot locate a VESA Mount Back Panel on my 24" HP Monitor Model # VH240a (***).  Can someone confirm that this monitor does or does not have a universal VESA mount option? I specifically purchased from Amazon as it claimed it was VESA compatible.

Do Restore files include a back up of the system registry?

I went to update Win 7 to 10 and had to do a restore when the process crashed.  I backup all of my files and got the OS to update.  I used HP Recovery Manager because it says it backs up files and programs.  I see the program files but not the system32/config folder.  Is the registry backed up or have I lost Office?

Supposedly the upgrade process from W7 to W10 includes the ability to roll back to W7.  You'll need to read up on that.  The "Recovery" process is very different than that, having to do with recovering a HP-created installation that was similar to what came with the original workstation.   That has some value, but has nothing to do with subsequent installs of software such as Office.

When I do a careful W7 to W10 upgrade with the intent to save all the programs etc. I know there is risk and I do a clone of the original before I try the upgrade.  I also do lots of cleaning and optimization of the original build.  I have been impressed lately with how well the upgrade preserves the other programs.  We run quite clean W7 installs to start with, so that helps.  Sorry to hear your bad news....
