Re: non LSI or Adaptec PCIe SATA-3 controller card in xw6600 for improved datatransfer of SSD

Have not tried exactly that, but have put in the HP Texas Instruments USB 3.0 "2x2" PCIe card and it is working great.

The thing to know about the xw6600 is that it has two PCIe Generation II slots, which can run up to 5Mbps.  Those are the two video slots, and the other PCIe slots are Gen I.  It is not until you get to the Z620 that you get Gen III (10 Mbps) slots showing up.

So, place the card you choose into the second (lower) video slot for fastest access to the PCIe bus.

Personally, I've moved away from SAS, and don't see big differences in user experience between SATA II and III.  So, for me the use of USB 3.0 with 5 Mbps speeds was the thing I really benefited from.  And, I was surprised to find that my chosen (fast) USB 3.0 thumb drive actually is significantly faster than my older USB 2 thumb drives even when plugged into HP USB 2.0 ports.  Connected to that HP USB 3 card it is amazingly fast.  I've posted on that card and how I use an Akasa front 3.5" form factor interface to get 2 of the 4 total USB3 ports up front where the floppy used to live.  Very nice clean install.

Hi there Anthony Smiley Happy

Would you mind further explaining what are you using the workstation for and the purpose of the upgrade that you are looking at?

Are you planning on adding more HDDs/SSDs to your system? Are you going to put them in a RAID configuration?

You should first consider what free PCIe ports you have and if you will be populating them with other expansion cards and what actual speeds will they provide you with.

SDH gave you some good suggestions and explanations!

Post back with some more details!

Will using 3rd party non HP options such as SFP's with HP servers affect my warranty

$

I want to use some 3rd party SFP's with my HP server. HP used to have the belowtext ont their website which states that the warranty is not affected as long as the 3rd party options are not the cause opf the fault. However I am now unable to find this page o n the website.

Does anybody have a link?

Q17. Will my warranty be affected if I install a non-HP upgrade/option in my HP product?

HP warranty extends only to HP products and options. If you install a non-HP option into your HP product and this option then fails, you must contact the supplier for warranty cover on that item.

The warranty on your HP product will not be affected by the installation of a non-HP upgrade/option unless your HP product is damaged as a result of installation and/or operation of a third party option, such damage will not be covered by HP warranty.

If your HP product is not operating correctly, you may be asked to verify that any non-HP option is not responsible for the problem be uninstalling any such items.

You need to login as an admin ( hold down the shift key while powering on or loggingoff ) and disable the Enhanced write filter ( the padlock icon on the system tray ) which would require a restart and after which you can  go to the Power and Sleep options  and change the options according to the settings you want.

Hi again, thank you for the reply, I did replied to you, but not fully understood your instruction, that is the population you want me to do for the two 4GB rams?I was populating them one at DIMM1 and one at DIMM3 as in the map.

I appreciate your further help and advise.

thank you very much.

You are very welcome, .

If you look closely at the System Board diagram on Page 90 and the description of the connections below it, you will see that #10 (white slot) and #11 (black slot) make up Channel A.  This means that you would populate them together.  While #12 (white slot) and #13 (black slot) make up Channel B.  As I read it, this means that you would populate these slots together.  Also, it is always best to use the same speed memory modules together.  Using different speeds can cause conflicts.

It appears that you have populated the Channels A & B this way, but with memory modules of different speeds.  Try the same speed modules in A to see what happens.

I'm looking to upgrade my HP z230's power supply from the base 400w to something around 600w, doing research however I learned that HP's motherboard is not compatible with normal 24 pin inputs but with a 18 pin input as such I have not been able to find a power supply that fits my system, does anybody have a solution to my problem?

Hi,thank you for the further instruction.

I have used ram of same speed DDR3 1333 4Gb each, I have populated the black slots only with 4GB ram in each to make dual channel mode as in the instruction map, is that not correct?do you want me to populate the one black slot with 4GB ram and one white slot with the other 4Gb ram, leaving the other slots empty?and will system work in single channel mode?

In the manual it says error 201 message is probably due to compatibility issue, once appeared is to run setup F10,I have tried this but it was not an option, the only option is to press F1 to reboot, why is this and do I have to reboot or shut PC down?

I should be most grateful for your further instruction and help?

thank you very much.

Hi again, I omitted to ask in my reply on which manual you refer at page 90?as there are few user guides for this model HP 8200 SFF Elite, the board map and dimm sites and numbers is shown on page 176 of the main user guide, but I assume it is the same map in all manuals, they all labelled as DIMM1,DIMM2,DIMM3,DIMM4.

SM951 M.2 SSD in a HP Z620

$

Hi all, my first post on this forum. Not so much a question but rather some possible helpful information regarding the newer style M.2 SSD cards around with regards to the HP Z620 workstation.

I recently purchased a 256GB Samsung SM951 MZHPV256HDGL-00000 PCI Express M.2 hard drive module to install in my HP Z620 workstation, like most people, the transfer speed certainly looks appealing. Prior to installing the module my Z620 was already configured with a 480GB SanDisk Ultra II 2.5" SSD as a boot drive with a Hitachi 2TB ( MBR with 1 partition) 7200rpm second drive and a Seagate 4TB (GPT with 3 partitions) 5900rpm third drive.

I initially purchased what I thought was a generic M.2 SSD to PCIe adapter card on ebay for about £8. (NOTE: These generic cards I mention appear to have the M.2 socket and a power LED with resistors and are very cheap). After fitting the M.2 SSD to the PCIe card, I plugged the card into the PCIe Gen3 x8 lane socket on the Z620 motherboard (i.e. the PCIe slot adjacent to the second GPU slot). Surprise, no SSD visible in the BIOS or under Windows. Like everyone else did a bit of digging around which resulted in me installing a Samsung NVMe driver and trying various other methods found on other forums but without any luck. Still not visible in the BIOS or in Windows.

As a last resort, I thought I would try a different PCIe adapter card and opted for the ASUS Hyper M.2 X4 Mini which cost about £27 on ebay. Swapped my SM951 onto the ASUS PCIe card and plugged it back into the same socket on the motherboard. Switched on the computer and waited for Windows to boot as normal and to my surprise the system appearred to load new drivers for the newly detected hardware. Sure enough, the device was diplayed in the device manager. After initialising the device in Disk Management the device was visible under windows explorer. As a final check I rebooted the PC to BIOS and confirmed the device was diplayed as a legacy bootable device.

Using the same method as I used for installing the OS on the 480GB SanDisk Ultra II, I simply used MiniTool Partition Wizard (which is free) to clone my OS drive to the SM951. (Use the disk copy wizard). After the copying finished my PC rebooted as expected but to my surprise it booted from the SM951 drive. (Note: The PC normally boots to the drive with the new OS but I was surpised that it booted so easily from the PCIe SSD without any tweaking). To confirm the changes I removed the 480GB SSD and tried rebooting which it did without any problems. After running Crystal Disk Mark 5, I can confirm read speeds just above 2000MB/s and write speeds of about 1300MB/s. My SanDisk SSD (which is one of the better SSD's on the market) reached about 550MB/s read and about 500MB/s write.

In summary, it appears the PCIe adapter card seems to be rather inportant if you want to use an SM951 M.2 SSD I would recommend you avoid the cheap adapter cards on ebay.

Although I cannot say for certain, using the ASUS adapter card may allow the SM951 to work as a bootable drive on the older Z400/Z600 machines since it dispays the SSD as a legacy device in the BIOS.

My full system:

2x Xeon E5-2670, 64GB (8x 8GB) 1866MHz RAM,  Samsung SM951 boot drive (via ASUS Hyper M.2 X4 Mini Adapter), SanDisk 480GB SSD, Hitachi 7200rpm 2TB, Seagate 5900rpm 4TB, Syba 2-port SATA III with 2x USB3.0, Quadro K4200, Tesla M2090, ICY Dock hot swappable 2.5" and 3.5" drive bay.

Here is the link to the Maintenance and Service Guide:

http://h20628.www2.hp.com/km-ext/kmcsdirect/emr_na-c04224518-1.pdf

Go to Page 90  to see the information on the memory.  Look at the System Board diagram and lables to see how the slots are grouped.  They are grouped in one white and one black in Channel A and the same in Channel B.  So, you don't use both whites or both blacks, but one white and one black in each Channel.

Re: Z400 heatsink fan 4 pin to 5 pin

It is not as easy as you'd think.  HP carefully balances cooling needs with the heat capacity of the heatsink and the fan combination, and applies a certain amount of PWM throttle to the fan so it runs at a certain speed at baseline.  The amount of PWM throttle is specific, and less PWM restriction will be supplied as you boost fan baseline speed in BIOS, and also as the motherboard's cooling control infrastructure responds to specific environmental stresses (such as rising ambient air temperature).  So, even though I can dink with these to my heart's content, I leave them at the HP standards.  Here's the key info if you wish to dink:

The Z400s largely use the higher capacity "performance" heatsink and fan with the 92x92x25mm fan.  This is because most of the processors of value for the Z400 are 130W max TDP.  In contrast, the dual processor Z600s processors of value usually run at 95 watt max TDP.  Hence, they usually get the smaller "mainstream" fan.  The more expensive processors run fast at lower temps.... the Z400 usual processors are more brute force (higher voltage solution, hence they run hotter for same fast speed).  The heat of two processors inside the Z600 is something HP needed to master.  To cool the single hot processor in a Z400 probably was easier, and the hot processor got HP more bang for the buck.

The Z400 performance heatsink/fan is HP part 463981-001, and its fan is a Delta AFB0912HH, with standard 4 wire PWM in/out of the motor.  The 5th hole in the plug would be empty if it was a mainstream heatsink/fan, and is occupied with a ground jumper from hole 1 to 5 if it is a performance heatsink/fan.  That is how the motherboard knows a performance fan is attached.  It can't tell by current or rpms what is going on..... So, there is some room for spoofing here, but I do not advisee that.  These HP fans often have a HP part number on their label (which is the direction of air flow always).  Then, it often will have an added modifier number for HP, and in this case it is -7W32.  That has to do with the specifics of the number of wires, their length, and the plug type.  See pic below:

AFB0912HH -7W32.jpg

This is exactly the fan from the Z400 performance heatsink, and that is the one I'd buy from eBay where I just snagged the pic from.  You can't see the plug well, but it is a 5-hole plug with the ground jumper just barely visible here.

Wiring:  As with conventional PWM wiring the pins 1-4 are ground, +12VDC, RPM sense to the motherboard from the motor, and finally PWM throttle control from the motherboard to the motor.  If you use a nice quiet PWM fan instead of the HP one it will be over-throttled by the built in HP PWM throttle and run too slow when you plug it into the motherboard.  I discovered this with nice Noctua PWM fans......

The motherboard knows if you have a 130W processor installed, and will protest if you don't spoof the wiring or give it the correct wiring with a proper fan (which is my advice now that you know what fan to go buy).  There also are other 4-wire 5-pin plug used HP fans you can get off eBay that will work too, and so you can experiment around.

You can salvage a 5-pin plug off a bad HP fan.  The brown plug ends are generally meant for rear/front case cooling.  I also have posted in here on my Mouser.com source of plug ends.  You can extract the metal ends from the plug if you are careful while pressing in the locking tab that you can see, and you can gently bend back out that thin fragile locking tab so it will work again if you want to solder on a ground jumper from terminal 1 to 5.   If you run these HP fans at 12VDC they run way too fast.   It is all a balance act HP figured out.  Things have gotten more complicated in the Z620 era and beyond.

SDH, thank you for your detailed anwser to my question. The reason i asked is because i think the fans are to loud, about 41db and temps are between 44 and 47 degrees in idle. I wanted to buy three decent noctua coolers, front and rear is no problem, but cpu is. Perhaps i buy two for good airflow and put some new thermal paste on the cpu. Once again thnx.
