Hi, I have a z820 with v1 processors. I want to upgrade it with e5 2600 v2. But boot block date of bios is 2011. I read the posts about how to upgrade z820 from sandy bridge to ivy bridge processors. I have a simple question, is external programming of bios with the latest version of bios and ME firmware sufficient and safe? or I should update only boot block date region.

How To Super Charge A Z4
What tweeks can I make to super charge this desktop without adding more RAM?
Elite 8300 CMT B8V01UT startup time
Windows 10 Pro 64bit v1803
Current BIOS K01 V02.05 - attempted to upgrade with HPQ Flash in Windows but log indicates it failed.
When using restart function from within Windows, machine takes about 80 seconds after exiting Windows to begin the restart process. That is, after "Restart" is selected, machine immediately begins the restart process. Windows exits within a few seconds and all goes black.
At this point the machine seems to hang. Power button remains green, fans stay running, no HDD activity. After approx 75 seconds, HDD light flashes momentarily. 5 seconds later OS begins restart process at normal speed.
Can't find any BIOS settings that immediately stand out as hampering the restart process.
Thanks in advance for any ideas.
Re: HP Z420 cannot boot after I switch to new Z27 display
strange, the nvs510 card is UEFI capable as it's a modern card. however legacy mode does initilise the display subsystem a bit diffrent than UEFI does and it may verry well be that UEFI mode may have a setting that was the cause in your video issueat boot
Last, the HP z420 is really not that old, it's just now being phased out of active support by HP and the z420 was released in 2013 so it's now about 4.5 years old but still holds it's own overall. Only the lack of nvme boot support might cause a user to replace the system
Re: Elite 8300 CMT B8V01UT startup time
so you updated the bios, and the system now will boot into the original bios without any problems, but windows itself will not load?
if the above is the case, look at the HD settings and note if set for IDE or SATA or AHCI+ Raid it's possible the failed update reset the setting try all of them and see if it boots, if not try a system repair using the windows setup files
please list the SPxxxxx of the file you used to try to update the bios.
you should never update bios from within windows, either use the DOS /USB key option or if your bios has this option,... update from within the bios itself
Re: HP Z420 cannot boot after I switch to new Z27 display
Thanks! Right. The 510 works perfectly for years on my old HP monitors under UEFI...
Re: HP Z400 not turning on..
are you using the z400 power supply? if not that's your problem as the z400 does not use a standard ATX pinout
to us a ATX supply, you can buy a adapter off amazon/newegg/ebay
if using the z400 supply, you either have a bad supply or bad motherboard.
google z400 power supply test to see how to check the HP supply
Re: z820 Bios and ME upgrade to support v2 processors
this question has been asked so many time here on this board.
please use this forums "search" function and you will get your answer
short reply, while you might be able to use a 56xx xeon on your v1 board it's not a sure thing and two 56xx xeons is almost guarenteed not to work the v2 MB has a diffrent revision chipset (updated) that fully supports the 56 series. it's not just the bios (which also can not be updated to v2 unless you desolder it and reprogram/replace)
Re: How To Super Charge A Z4
supercharge it for what to do what?
if you want it to look racy/fast, i recomend some bright red lightling bolt stickers
if you have a specific thought on what you wish to do, .....please give us some details of the current configuration to work with......... along with your thoughts on just what you wish to try changing.

The update failed, however, the system boots normally. I'm posting this from the machine in question.

Both options were provided in the README file with the update.
Any idea regarding the restart time?
Many thanks for your help!
Re: Elite 8300 CMT B8V01UT startup time
what is your current bios revision? early revisions before 2.99 must first install the intermediate bios v2.99 before installing the latest 3.06
the above information is from a previous poster and my reply to him. if you use this forums "search" feature you can access many helpfull posts from previous posters and possibly get your answer without asking in a new post
i recomend you try updating the bios again from dos/usb key using the information above, and if still having a problem try resetting it to defaults, using the clear "CMOS" button by powering off remove pwr cord, press pwr button for 7 sec then press reset cmos button or remove the cmos battery and after 10 min reinstall cmos and reboot. enter bios and check options are configured corect for your needs/hardware then reboot into windows
Re: HP Z400 not turning on..
I was using a ThermalTake 700W powersupply, but i have also tried using standard HP powersupply that came with the system i.e. 475Watts PSU ( made by DELTA ELECTRONICS )..
Re: HP Z400 not turning on..
I have used both PSUs but non of them worked, so all these symptoms leads to bad motherboard, i guess, is there anything else left, before declaring motherboard dead?
Re: Elite 8300 CMT B8V01UT startup time
Many thanks Dave.
I'd rather forego the BIOS update for now if possible.
What do you think about the restart time issue? Please see the OP for details.
Re: z820 Bios and ME upgrade to support v2 processors
Agree fully with DGroves, but let me be even more definitive. If you want HP approved Z820 v2 processors to run in your Z820 you have only one option.... buy a new or used HP Z820 v2 motherboard and do the swap. It is not so bad of a project if you are willing to take it on.
It is easier to upgrade one of these ZX20 motherboards with a used Z820 v2 motherboard than a brand new "virgin" one because you don't need to "brand" or "tattoo" a used motherboard. If you happen to buy a new motherboard get back in touch with me.
The old branding/tattooing procedures were complex, required different proprietary utilities, and are invalid for the newer HP workstations.... don't go reading up on that old news. It does not apply now, thankfully.
Re: HP Z400 not turning on..
yes the board appears to be dead if the HP suppply passes it's diag test
the thermaltake supply may have damaged the board depending on how long and how many times you powered the system board with it
the above is not something you want to hear, but use it as a learing experence and in the future allways check workstation/server, or oddball systems like All In One (AIO) specs before deciding at random it uses standard parts
many people only see generic systems and have no idea that non standard systems still exist, i have been in the "IT" field over 25 years and as such remember the early days when there were multiple ways of doing computer equipment
Re: Elite 8300 CMT B8V01UT startup time
i suspect the bios update will resolve the delay issue, you might want to check the bios for boot from network, boot from usb/cd/HD options to see if they reduce the delay
Re: z820 Bios and ME upgrade to support v2 processors
SDH is spot on about NEW Virgin z820 boards needing the serial set (IE- enter the ser# found on the HP label on the case)
if the board comes from a valid HP reseller it will boot into the custom settings page, and be advised you only get ONE CHANCE in entering in this information. if you get it wrong then the board needs to be exchanged for another as HP has not released the tool that they use to reset this information having bad information is not the end of the world, but it may prevent windows from activating requiring a call TO MS for getting it activated
HP service techs will sometimes use a tool to copy the information from a bootable board and then push this info onto the new board.
doing it this way decreases the chance for errors, but since it's only 3 or 4 fields you can get it right by simply taking your time and tripple checking the typed information before writing it on the new board
BTW, dell, and some lenovo models also require this step
Re: HP Z400 not turning on..
I appreciated your suggestions,
but i cant understand how ThermalTake PSU could damage the board, i modded the PSU to make it suitable for the motherboard?
Thanks,
