Wifi Download Problems

Hello,

I wanted to ask about an issue I have with my HP Elitebook 840 G4 running Windows 10 (about a year old). I realized about 1 month ago that I had trouble with my laptop downloading files from the internet using Wifi (I realized this the first time after a factory reset and am not sure whether the problem had already been present before). Downloads of medium to large files (e.g. 50 MB) using Wifi would go very sluggish and would most of the time come to a complete halt. This was independent of the network (I tried it at multiple networks, with different laptops, only my HP would show problems) or the used browser. With an Ethernet cable there aren’t any problems downloading. I contacted the HP customer service, which, after making sure that my software (wifi drivers etc.) was up to date, decided to send me a new wifi module, that I could replace myself. Replacement of the Wifi module however didn’t solve or improve the issue. Out of frustration I installed a Linux dual-boot and when running Linux I don’t have any issues downloading files via Wifi, which I guess rules out the hardware defect originally suggested by the HP customer service. My question is whether no other users have reported this issue? Since then I have again reset my laptop to factory setting to make sure that no new software is causing the problem but the issue persists. I actually tried the same model in a store connected to the store’s Wifi and their laptop also seemed to have the same trouble when downloading a test file from the internet. Therefore I would be quite surprised if no other people have reported similar issues… I have pretty much given up hope by now but would of course be thankful for any helpful advice.

Thank you very much!

look on your card, note the chip number (may be covered with a startek label)

as i previously said the company making the card/chip is "Asix"  and the chip should be mcx9835 and their site is now back online

have you tried another pci-e card in that slot?

have you tried the card in the other motherboard slots?

I think my issue is that my test machine has a BIOS password set on it. My fault, Duh.

Most of our systems don't have a password so I'll work on testing with them next, should be good.

I've also opted to install MIK in our SCCM world which appears to be able to do much of this automagically. I am running into issues with creating policies there but that's for another post!

With Ae, I suppose you refer to Adobe After Effects?
Whilst Iam not familiar with your specific work flow, I have dealt with similar issues and requests from video artists and photographers.
Iam also familar with the Apple Ecosystem > upgrading a Mac for Pro Tools and other DAW software as I type this reply.

Although your Mac Pros are no slouch they are quite easily outperformed by (even previous generations) HP Workstations that are optimized for your specific needs. I specifically mention previous generations, because going that route might save you a serious amount of money.

Apart from raw processing power, amount of RAM and performance of the SSD's, the GPU's could also make a difference in render times.
Given the fact that Apple Mac Pro's are based on hardware from 2013 with older Xeons and AMD D-Series GPUs, while perfectly capable of professional video/photo editing, these are definitely no longer the best choice for high performance video processing tasks.
As with CAD software, there are certain hard/software combinations that will give a much better performance compared to others.

Ae works best with nVidia. For example: if your workflow consists of 3D Graphics, the nVidia P-Series are optimized for the use with its 3D Ray Traced Render Engine.
Another thing to consider is higher speed per (CPU)core with a lower number of total cores vs. multiple low speed cores. While After Effects is primarily a single or lightly threaded application, the recent integration with Cinema4D heavily favors higher core counts.

And here is an interesting comparison between the 8th generation Intel processors vs. their similar priced 2nd generation AMD Ryzen opponents with After Effects:

No surprises there ;-)

Finally, it's good to remember: raw performance is one thing, long term reliability another.

While I like AMD GPU's, I prefer Intel Xeons CPU's for their stability and reliability.

I have some 10 year old HP workstations which are still going strong without any major breakdowns.

From my original post:

I've installed a StarTech PEX2S5531P 2 Serial/1 parallel PCIe card in this PC but it is not recognised at all - i.e. nothing shows up in Device Manager.

The card works fine in another (non-HP PC) - I've actually tried 2 cards of the same type.

The PCIe slot in the PC works fine (tried a network card in it).

So, yes... I have tried another card in the slot and the slot does work. I have tried the card in a different slot and it still does not work (does not show up in device manager). I have tried the card in another PC and the card works fine.

I have all the drivers ready but I never get asked for them. There is nothing in device manager to install the driver to because nothing to do with this card shows up and there are no unrecognised devices.

Having major issues with a number of these machines just randomly restarting.

We have upgraded the BIOS and Intel HD Graphics driver however this doesn't seem to have helped.

PC's have been imaged as Windows 7 32-bit - could this be a cause as I believe these machines are Windows 10 out of the box?

After reading your post once more,  you may find appropriate info on your specific needs here

not really going to happen this is a lowend budget system with a intel Bay Trail-D Pentium J2900 series cpu (2.41GHZ, 2mb cache) using the cpu's embedded graphics  (Intel HD Graphics )

the case is a custom low profile design, and  the power supply is not a ATX standard unit, it's a external 65 watt laptop style HP made unit specific to this series model

as such you can not even install a pci-e card due to power limits and no pci-e slots (the motherboard is more like a laptop than a PC system)

if you wish to have better graphics you will need to replace the system, there is nothing that can be done to overcome the hardware limitations of this system in reguards to expanadability

which bios update did you use? the current update resolves random crashing that the previous one had

go to the hp web site and download the current (reissued) bios if you are not running the lates one(s)

The G3 machines were running BIOS version 2.11 and have been upgraded to version 2.16

Doesn't seem to help.

ok i had to be sure as the bios files are diffrent between the 2 models

have you looked at the windows log files? (not the crash dump file) does the system and allpication logs show anything?

do you have any addin cards installed? is win 7 current with all updates  what revisions are the audio/video/printer drivers installed

the most common files to give problems are the audio/printer drivers

what software is run on the system?

is antivirus installed? and if so is it the current revision with all vender patches installed?

Sometimes issues can be solved by applying some simple tricks.

Try replacing the CMOS battery with a fresh one. After removal of the old battery, wait at least 1 minute  before putting  a fresh one in the socket. An exhausted battery, while seemingly still fully functional, may cause issues when flashing the CMOS chip with a new BIOS (CMOS is the memory on a motherboard that stores the BIOS settings. A small CR2032 battery, called a CMOS battery).

outperforming z230 e3 1225V3 3,2 GHZ vs older z600 dual quad core L5620 V1 - B

My fellow HP board members I am considering a newer workstation for my partner / wife. She uses now a aging z600 l5620 dual westmere cpu's with an Samsung Evo 250G2 2.5 SATA SSD and 24 GB of ECC memory.

She does not do content creation (video/audio editing)  nor is she a photoshop whizz. She needs a machine that does financial administration more than well, is stable, expandable yet does not require the horsepower of a z620 or later machines at this point. She does work with large Excel documents and has two to three or perhaps more monitors for those purposes.

I was thinking she might be better of with a newer machine and since she does not require an z620 or z640 /z440 a newer z230 might do it, sff or the regular tower. USB3.0 ports and SATA III 6 Gbps ports are more than a welcome addition.

Please tell me what you think about my reasoning for a newer z230.
