I've just taken delivery of 3 Z840 Workstations with Turbo Drive G2 SSDs, none of which I can get to boot.

The SSDs are not shown as a UEFI boot device in BIOS (v02.26)

After looking high and low online, I havent had any success with any of the 3 machines. I believe Windows 7 is installed on the disk, but I can't get the machines to recognise them.

The spec is 2 x Intel Xeon E5-2650, 64GB RAM, NVIDIA M4000 GPU, Turbo Drive G2 SDD

Can anyone help?

Why I am not familiar with the Zx40 line, taking into consideration the lack of replies and on assumption that there are some similiarities to the Zx20 line, go into the bios and see if you have the following options or similiar:

PXE Option Roms

Mass storage option roms

Video Option roms

On the Z420 these are in the 'Advanced' tab in the 'Device options' menu - make sure they are all set to 'EFI' and not 'Legacy'.

In terms of the bios do not worry too much about the device not being visible - it may just apear as 'Windows Boot Manager' assuming that there is a UEFI boot partition on the drive.

PS my new project right now would be to perhaps have the z600 of my wife which I need to do a reinstall of Windows 10 and uefi boot and perhaps have her current Samsung Evo 850 Gen2 drive replaced coupled to a LSI  Sas 9212-4i controller card.

From what I recall the Z600 is not UEFI capable. This was introduced in the Zx20 line.

In any case I would not spend too much money on the Z600 at this moment in time, especially with the falling prices of the Zx20 machines and abundance of supply thereof since a lot of companies have just come to the end of their three year hardware replacement cycle for these machines.

Capturing help from Brian in a message.

Windows 10 msconfig.com seems a little buggie,

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=luGZC-5DeQA

In Boot tab, advanced options - (per video) it was only allowing selection of 2 cores, not the 16 cores that Device Manager showed. It seems that the solution is to select '1' in # of processors, Save, Reboot, then running MSCONFIG again all 16 cores appeared as an option. Selected 16 & saved, rebooted again. After that all 16 cores showed in Task Manager, benchmark went up to over 13,000.

FIXED!

While your solution is probable it would most likely never be a Windows bug. I have never encountered a Windows processor checked bug with updating W10 on multiple platforms.  While your fix may have solved the issue it's not likely to occur.

As indicated by the video, the number of processors is unchecked by default.

HP Z Drive with Samsung 960 Pro

Hello everyone!

I have a HP z840 Workstation and a HP Z Drive (G1) as Main drive. This one got dusty the last 2 years and I want to replace it with the new Samsung 960 Pro.

Is it possible to replace the SSD on the HP Z drive with the 960 Pro SSD and use the HP card as the new SSD holder?

Thanks in advance,

best regards,

Granroyal

Hp T730 thin client: unmountable boot volume

We have a problem with our new HP T730 thin clients. Sometimes, not always on the same client, we receive a blue screen while booting: Your PC ran into a problem and nees to restart. If you'd like to know more, you can search online later for this error: UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

When i turn the client off and on again it boots normally. It doens't happen al the time on the same client. We got 60 clients and when i use HP device manager to roll out our image then i got about 8 thin clients with this error. This happends on the last reboot from imaging fase.

Also we receive this blue screen suddenly when working on the T730. This happends 2/3 times a week on one of the 60 thin clients during work..

I contacted HP and created a case. But they can't figure it out. First it was the problem of our image. Then the hardware. But with a clean HP T730 and a new image created with HP Thinupdate we also receive this error. My guess it is a problem within Windows 10 IOT.

Does anyone has this problem? Perhaps also has a solution? Smiley Happy

Not sure that it is worth going this route - the Z Drive G1 has an AHCI style controller, while the 960 Pro is NVMe.

For the 960 Pro you could get a $5 m.2 to PCIe adapter card from e.g. Ali Express or - at a higher price ($20-25) - the Asus Hyper m.2 PCIe expansion card. Both would work fine with the 960 Pro.

HP T620 Plus – need VGA ribbon cable

Hi All;

I'm trying to get into the BIOS without any success. According to an HP “Read-This-First!”, publication 746074-B21, I must connect the monitor to the VGA display port on the back panel.

Unfortunately, I don't have a VGA display port on my back panel – I have two serial ports connectors...

I've found the VGA 16-pin motherboard connector and figure that I need to connect a VGA ribbon cable to it to get BIOS POST screen.

The standard motherboard ribbon cable (16-pin to 15-pin VGA port) won't fit. The 16-pin motherboard side of this cable I need a either a laptop, thin client, or HP propriety cable to fit the 18mm by 5mm motherboard connector.

So, can anyone tell where to get these cables, or what they are called so I can do a search, or the HP part number so I can order it from HP?

Any assistance would be appreciated;

Thanks, Norm

I just ordered a 64GB 1866mhz ECC Registered RAM kit for the Z420 with the intention to upgrade to a v2 Ivy Bridge processor in the future.

I am presently running a v1 processor (E5-1650) - is my understanding correct that until I upgrade to one of the higher v2 processors the new RAM will still be running at 1600mhz?

OK, so just finished installation of a 64GB kit of 1866mhz ECC Registered RAM kit (Samsung memory) in the Z420.

System booted up and POST'ed just fine, needed to press F1 to save the new memory values.

Since I am running a Xeon 1650 v1, BIOS is showing RAM speed @ 1600mhz.

Going into HP Performance Advisor it shows rated speed at 1866mhz and configured speed at 1600mhz.

So with the RAM maxed out and with 1866mhz speed attainable, the machine is ready for a nice Xeon v2 CPU upgrade sometime in the future Smiley Wink

Great bro finallly I got all the thing working.

Z420 / Z620 supported processors

We know that Z420/620 with a boot block date of 2011 support the E5 v1 processors while those with the bootblock date of 2013  support both E5 v1 and v2 processors. The precise processors recommended / endorsed by HP are contained in the quick spec documents for each machine

Bearing in mind that the bios image file is the same for both the Z420 and Z620, it is my assumption is that all processors contained in the Z620 quickspecs will also run on the Z420, of course taking into account the respective boot block date issue. It has been confirmed that amongst others the E5-2660, E5-2670,  E5-2680 and E5-2690 -listed in the Z620 quick specs - work fine in the Z420.  Any thoughts or information to the contrary?

Also had a look at the latest Z420 /620 bios image - v.3.91. It contains the following microcode:

CPUID=306E4 Rev=427 2014/04/10 CRC=A73DF352 Off=580060 Size=3000 Plat=0,2,3,5,6,7
CPUID=206D7 Rev=710 2013/06/17 CRC=30EAA2E5 Off=583060 Size=4400 Plat=0,2,3,5,6
CPUID=206D6 Rev=61A 2013/01/25 CRC=BC4B0272 Off=587860 Size=4000 Plat=0,2,3,5,6
CPUID=206D5 Rev=513 2011/10/13 CRC=BDB805CB Off=58B860 Size=4800 Plat=0,2,3,5,6

CPUID refers to a family of CPU's and not one particular CPU. 306E4 is the ID for the Ivy Bridge Xeon E5 v2 line with the CPU's listed here: http://www.intel.co.uk/content/dam/www/public/us/en/documents/specification-updates/xeon-e5-v2-spec-update.pdf -does this imply that all these CPU's will work in the Z420?

FYI in comparison Bios versions pre 3.50 (e.g. version 1.23) do not have the 306E4 microcode.

Problems with one of the z420. This computer I need to have a boot drive and 3 indivual drives for three seperate projects. Did a clean install no problem with windows 7. Boot up and only the boot drive and SATA 1 one are showing. The other 2 drives are off line.

I know it has something to do with the RAID controller in the BIOS and I can't find it. Also did not update the BIOS because lots of post about trouble.

Any quick fix or where to fix? The last 4 ports are not showing.

Control i or n - not working - hangs up and does not give me the RAID control  menu.

Thanks in advance.

Is AHCI+RAID enabled in the bios?

Are the Intel RST drivers installed?

I received an email on Dec 8 concerning critical driver alerts in November.  I can access the alert page online but the links do not work.  I have tried repeatedly to get to the page where I can download the software.  Before I waste any more time searching, I thought I would post here. Thanks.

 Yes, the rather large company I work for has seen failures. To be frank I don't have very good results with Blue Label Western Digital Drives. Which seems to be the drives of choice on the ED800 G1. Here are the tests we have done to try and get this machine to stabilize.

 Using AHCI instead of IDE emulation, replacing the Western Digital drives with (New) Seagate drives, make sure to disable the Sata Power Option in the BIOS and finally making sure that UEFI drives and Legacy drives listed are in the correct order. I have noticed that by default on some G1 machines in legacy the drives are listed Drive 1 and then Drive 0.

 We tracked the problem machines down to one pallet of ED G1. So, I don't think it has been 5% however, it has still been an irritation. Interestingly enough the primary drive reports problems and then the drive will disappear or the problems at that point begin to occur on the secondary drive and the secondary dissappears.

Sometimes, I can right click on Computer and go to manage /  disk management / More Actions / and Refresh or Rescan the drives and the missing drive(s) reappear for a few hours to a few days. After all that we have done I still have approximately 6 machines no longer under warranty that continue to manifest this strange behavior.

You're very welcome.

The chipset driver should install all of those 8086 device.

I have zipped up and attached the Microsoft hotfix you need to install the ACPI\MSFT0101 device which is the TPM 2.0 device.

Download, unzip and run the file.
