Read up on "HP Link-5" technology. 1 little USB interface dongle can link to up to 5 devices at once, and the devices are easily changed (they are not matched to a particular Link-5 dongle until they are "paired" to it by the user).
We've been using the specific HP Link-5 mouse shown HERE for years. The batteries in the mouse seem to last almost forever, and HP also has fancier Link-5 mice. You can link any of them to your existing Link-5 dongle. Link-5 is a proprietary HP technology, different from Bluetooth, and there is a brief article on Link-5 HERE .
I have attached a PDF on Link-5 from HP below...
Can a internal 9/10 female usb cable be connected to a 5 pin male internal usb header on the motherboard?
the answer to your question is yes you can connect a single or dual usb female connector to a motherboard's 5 pin usb header (in a dual header only one usb is actually connected)
however,............the real question is...............what is the motherboards USB pinout? and does follow the USB standard pinout and of the five pins which end is pin one?
not all motherboards follow the USB pinout spec for onboard 5 pin headers and OEM motherboards are more likely to use a non standard pinout
see if the HP maintenance and service guide for your model has the pinouts of the motherboard
https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-z2-tower-g4-workstation/20063240/manuals
so you really need to look at the board makers motherboard pinout specs before assuming that five pin header is usb, and that it follows the default usb pinout
Rask5 were you able to get the issue resolved? I am also having keyboard failure after installing the update on an HP EliteBook x360 1030 G2.
logitech is a OEM maker of many HP mice/keyboards, and they also offer a usb wireless system called "logitech unifying receiver" that also allows multiple devices on one usb key
the logitech wireless kbd/mouse kits will also work
what i don't know is if the OEM HP USB dongle is interchangeable with the retail logitech one
has anyone tried this? if so di it work?
No, HP is hell bent on going by whether the laptop is under warranty or not. The supervisor refuses to come on the phone. Irrespective of warranty, they need to own up to the problem caused by their update and provide a fix. My keyboard is completely dead now, does not respond in the bios either.
This gave them another excuse to just blame it as a hardware issue and can't fix without billing it to me. The root cause of that issue is still that update and they will not own up to it. Can't come down on the support techs answering the phone, they are just parrorts reading off of the system following protocol and policies. The supervisors, managers do have authority but will hide behind the front line staff.
I want this thread to go viral and have more people comment so there is a legal basis. Ofcourse this is an hp forum, they will most likely moderate and shut out down before that happens, so am keeping records.
Hello everyone,
We are slowly transitioning from equipping our employees with HP Z440 to the new Z4 G4 series. The original plan is to upgrade every HP Z440 to its maximum RAM capacity for hypervisor-purposes, but our testing bench got stuck with Error 520 - Memory fan (2) is not installed. We already bought everything according to HP Z440 Technical Manual, even for the Memory Fan. We are at BIOS version 2.52 Rev A.
Is there anyway to fix or at least, bypassing this issue during boot? Since working from home isn't feasible when someone have to tap Enter just to get through that Error 520.
Thanks and have a nice day.
The E5-2697 v2 CPU is not listed in the HP Z420 Quickspecs, but then again, the E5-2667 v2 CPU you're currently using is not listed either. I can confirm that both these CPU's are listed in the HP Z620 quickspecs, and the Z420 and Z620 share the same BIOS. Since the BIOS contains a whitelist of compatible CPU's in the BIOS microcode, I see no reason why the E5-2697 v2 would not run just fine. I'm afraid this is a bit of a grey area, unless some other forum member has an E5-2697 v2 CPU installed in their HP Z420 machine, or at least tested the configuration, it might require a leap of faith. If it doesn't work you could always re-list the CPU on ebay.
I assume the applications you are running require more CPU cores? Your current CPU (E5-2667 v2) is an excellent CPU in terms of all round performance. It is the fastest E5 v2 CPU (that can be run in dual CPU configuration) in terms of single threaded performance and also has an all core clock speed of up to 3.6GHz. Before spending any money - I would first confirm that your software or applications can take advantage of the additional cores - very few applications can utilize more than 3 or 4 cores. However, if you're running multiple VM's, or CPU video rendering then more cores will definitely help.
Thank You DGroves For the quick response. After reviewing the motherboard diagram the port is labeled a 5 pin internal usb motherboard header. What is ironic is there 4 pins a blank and 1 more pin For a total of 5 pins one blank between pin 4 and pin 6. I have been told that usb ports do come that way.
Again thank you for the response.
yes you only really need 4 lines/pins for usb 2.0 pwr/gnd/ and 2 data lines the missing pin is a optional case system ground pin
just make sure you get the orientation correct, as applying power to the data lines or reverse power polarity on a usb header is sure to ruin your day (IE- kill the usb port)
Hi all -
Is there a way for me to access/buy the pinout info for the HP AF480A battery pack (Li-ion, server UPS), either directly through HP or via an authorized repair center? Used in the R12000/R18000 UPS line
Thank you!
This error implies that a fan in your system is not working or is intermittent or is missing
open the case, and confirm that the fan that sits over the rear memory slots is spinning
this rear memory cooler shroud/fan as i recall is part# 663345-001 google for it to see pictures of it
you also have a rear case fan and a optional Front Cooling Fan Assembly part# 647113-001 that is required if using all ram slots and/or a high power cpu or all pci-e slots filled
make sure all fans are connected to the proper motherboard fan headers
confirm by looking at the z420 maintenance and service manual
https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-z420-workstation/5225033/manuals
are you sure it's a LI-Ion battery and not a SLA (sealed lead acid) battery pack?
almost every UPS i have seen uses SLA and not Li-Ion batteries as this technology is quite new to UPS'S
hmmmm it appears that the ups model you have is Li-Ion in the 1U form factor and SLA in the 3U form factor

last, this is a HP Enterprise product and not a HP Inc product so you are on the wrong companies forum you need to go here:

Windows Update installed this 8.10.1.1 driver to my laptop (HP ProBook 450 G5, product number 3JJ41UT#ABA that this site does not recognize at all, by product number nor serial number) on Sept. 2 and, after I restarted on Sept. 4, my keyboard soon stopped responding. I initiated a restart and it would not even restart, just hung with the spinny animation.
I forced power off and started it again. I used System Restore to roll back the update. I checked Windows Update and found that it was already pending again. I used wushowhide.diagcab (see https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4026726/windows-10-hide-updates-or-driver-updates) to "hide" the update, but Windows went ahead and installed it again anyway.
I subsequently updated my laptop from Windows 10 1903 to 1909 and everything seems to be working fine for now, knock wood. The 8.10.1.1 is apparently still installed.
I also used Group Policy Editor to "Do not include drivers with Windows Update" going forward; we'll see how that works.
On my laptop that driver seems to originate from this location:
c:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\hpqkbfiltrextension.inf_amd64_3f05c88ad1c68c6b. In that folder, there is a file c:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\hpqkbfiltrextension.inf_amd64_3f05c88ad1c68c6b\HpqKbFiltrExtension.inf that contains (among other lines):
DriverVer = 08/03/2020,8.10.1.1
Mfg = "HP Inc."
CompanyName = "HP Development Company, L.P."
HP.ExtensionDesc = "HP LAN/WLAN/WWAN Switching and Hotkey Service"
As to the connection with "HP Manageability Integration Kit", the support desk agent probably just Googled HP 8.10.1.1 same as you or I could and found it among the search results, where if you open the PDF you find that 8.10.1.1 is just a section number of a document. Bah.
I think all updates should be optional, especially drivers, with full information available telling exactly what issue they are supposed to address. I am really sore that Windows 10 no longer gives user control over updates.
I am amazed this driver can actually cause physical damage to a keyboard, but not saying it can't. Rask5, are you saying your keyboard is completely dead, even in the BIOS? How did you manage a system restore, image recovery and fresh install without a working keyboard? Can you do all that with an external keyboard?
It is a 5 pin usb motherboard header. 1-4 pin and 5 blank. I can use this for my TP-Link Archer AX3000 Wireless Dual-Band Wi-Fi Adapter with Bluetooth 5.0 Bluetooth 9/10 pin internal cable. I Can match 1-4 pins on the 9/10 5 pin blank cable to The 5 pin 1-4 pin with 5 pin blank. Lines up perfectly. Thank You For You help I
So for me this was the only update that was installed and pending reboot. Everything was working perfectly up until then. The reboot happened and the keyboard starts mis typing, keys which are not near by were typing out, could not enter password. Cleanrd the keyboard, did virus deep scans.. All clean. Then tried system restore and there was no restore point before this update, only had one from back in may when i had performed a backup. I chose that. Did not work, have some error. Tried a system image recovery which was from the same day, that worked but the keyboard waa still misbehaving. Then forced to do a full clean install. Updated all hp drivers per their recommendations. This time the keyboard started working in bios but still misbehaving in windows. However after a few reboots, it is now fully dead.
The HP update was force pushed thru windows update with no option to choose. I have since then unchecked driver downloads and there are a bunch of hp updates in that list.
And yes, using an external keyboard. It also sometimes seem to affect mouse keypad on and off
Hi Brian1965, thanks for replying. I believe the performance penalty is likely caused by the Spectre/Meltdown patches which were bundled with BIOS revisions after 03.91. I'm currently running 03.94 as there was a patch mentioned to prevent boot issues with Windows 10 which I am running on this system instead of Windows 7.
On the topic of the Z420 and cooling/overclocking: I have added the front intake fan which my unit did not come with, and also have both the front memory airflow shroud and a Z440 CPU heatsink on order as with the system OC'd it does tend to run a bit hotter than I'd like. I did apply some new Noctua NT-H2 paste today which dropped the temperature under load by almost 8-10*C so that's an improvement for the meantime -- however I'm wondering now if the airflow shroud and the larger heatsink will still fit together or if there won't be enough clearance? I didn't want to go with Z420's liquid cooler as I tend to stick with air cooling and the age/cost of available parts.
Hi DGroves,
Both of the fans are spinning and working correctly, and all 5 fans are installed and running (Front Fan, Rear fan, CPU and 2 memory fans). And I think the manual from Z440 is differ from Z420, since I cross-referenced both of them.
Scubby.
