now I noticed on links you provided they have preformace set ups that are good better and best, where would doing 8GB in the 1st and 4th and everything esle 2GB end up as good, better, or best? Just curious

Near the bottom of another thread, here, I wrote a reply explaining how to install memory in systems with multiple memory channels and how to get the best performance.  In short:

   - The Z400 has 3 memory channels.  Each channel has 2 DIMM slots, one black and one white.

   - For best performance, load the same memory in all 3 channels.  Start putting memory in the black connectors, then load the white ones.

   - In your case, your original plan of 3 x 4GB in the black and 3 x 2GB in the white was the "best" configuration.  This puts the same memory in all the black and white connectors.

8GB DIMMs were not readily available when the Z400 was released in 2009.  Adding 1 or 2 8GB DIMMs to the system will (probably) work, but unmatched channels can reduce performance.  Whether it matters with your application depends.  Sometimes memory bandwidth is not the limiting factor in performance, maybe having more memory will matter more.  FYI.
