511 CPU Fan Not Detected

I know others have posted this question but none of the answers so far apply to this situation.

Friend has 3515 HP Desktop, about 2 years old, Win 7 64 bit, AMD A4-5300, 4GB, etc. Already tried all existing suggestions I could find (check dust, spin blades w/finger, unplug/replace cable/connector, etc).

Recently this began displaying above message at boot. Took side off - no dust, CPU fan spins freely, case fan operates normally, PC runs normally after F1 key press, but CPU fins are very warm. Cpncern is it will experience "thermal event" (is this processor protected like Intel?).

Ran diagnostics at boot, all hardware OK - FAN EVEN RUNS AFTER TEST, BUT STOPS AGAIN AFTER BOOT.

This suggests to me it's not a hardware (mobo, fan, etc issue).

Checked for BIOS update, there was slightly newer version - downloaded installed (JAS_817). Again, diagnostics caused CPU fan to run full speed, but stopped on boot.

Any ideas what to do next? I thought about getting a new fan, but since existing runs quite well I still think it's a software problem, but new BIOS did not fix, so I'm flummoxed.

What else could it be? Thanks for any help...     DV
