Re: XW6400 with no processor, memory, video card

Good progress.....

That 5130 is good as a socket cover to protect those tiny pins, but not of any value otherwise..... If you can get a SLAEJ and run it then you'll be able to run two of those just fine.

On the Evo..... we really have had some issues with the Samsung SSDs on these xw workstations.  The Samsung Magician software also has given us issues, and it reports the BIOS AHCI status incorrectly (and has for years).  If you listen to me on any issue choose that to be getting the Intel SSD for your xw6400 I recommended, and use the Intel Toolbox software.  If you must use Evo at least update its firmware with Magician first, then do a full low level format with DBAN third, then NTFS long format third, and you might be happy.

If you like what you're seeing with your xw6400 and choose to get another then take a hard long look at the xw6600 instead.  There are significant improvements, and you get into another era of processors with its fastest two quad cores.  Never have had an issue running those in any of the xw6600s I've built up.  The way to think of it is that the souped up xw6600 gets you about 3/4 of the way to a Z620 unless you're willing to dump big bucks into the Z620 revision 1, which moves things up to another level.  The xw6600 is quieter, has more efficient power supply, has PCIe x16 gen 3 slots rather than gen 1, still uses the same memory but can use 8GB sticks if you really need lots of memory, and wants that same Intel SSD.  You also can easily run a TI based USB3 card off the lower PCIe x16 slot and not throttle your USB bandwidth like a gen 1 slot would.

A very nice eBay used Quadro card I like a lot is the FX1800, or even the FX3700 which eats more power but is a bit faster.  Next one up we use a lot is the Quadro 2000.
