As was mentioned for the Xeon processors usually it is stated that ECC RAM is a requirement. HP states that it should be ECC unbuffered however ECC registered also works fine.
As for non ECC RAM officially it is not supported on the Xeon processors. I would assume non ECC RAM would work (or rather would be required) when running a LGA 2011 i7 CPU in the Z420 (bios microcode would indicate this is possible).
SO all in all chances are slim that this will work, but its worth a try nethertheless . You can try clearing CMOS (there is a button on the motherboard, first disconnet the power cable), also try installing just one stick of ram, experimenting with different slots, and see if the machine POSTs. If it does, try successivly adding in more sticks.
