We use 50 Thin clients HP T520. On the intranet, with freerdp connection we don't have any problem (web pages is displayed very well and it work fine), but on extranet (wan), so with VPN we have a slow connection at the level of web pages and also at the level of the applications. The server part using Windows Server 2008 R2. We noticed that we have others HP Thin client (like t5550, T5545, T5540 or T510) and we have the same problems via VPN. For all we used HP ThinPro as operating system.
We have tested the VPN connections with Desktop Pc (Windows 7) + RDP, but we have not any problems with the connection's speed, and everything works fine.
So, in short:
Thin client + RDP (FreeRDP without VPN, intranet) = no problem
Descktop PC (classic) RDP + VPN = no problem
Thin client (HP, Thinpro) + RDP (FreeRDP) VPN = slow internet connection and blocking of applications.
So where is the problem?
