I agree with you that 4 previously problem-free computers all suddenly experiencing the same symptoms does sound more like software than hardware. Nevertheless it would be a good idea to do hardware diagnostics on at least your own computer. I've had multiple motherboards (same as each other but different from yours) all fail within a short period of time due to bad capacitors.
I'd recommend:
- Inspect your motherboard for bulging / ruptured / missing electrolytic capacitors.
- Use compressed air to blow dust out of CPU heatsink & any other heatsinks.
- Check RAM by running at least 1 pass of memtest86
- Stress test with prime95 (while monitoring temperatures if possible).
If the above fails to turn up anything you probably don't have a hardware problem.
