I am in the process of setting up an older refurbished Z820 for NLE use. As the hardware, drives, etc. seem to change constantly I would like to get some ideas from the experts here as to my current best setup options.
My Z820 currently runs a pair of E5-2690's, 32GB of 1600, 5000 Quadro, three sata drives of 256, 500, and 1 TB capacity. Windows 10 Pro.
I would like to setup the workstation to be able to deal natively with 4k + raw video in Resolve, Adobe, Smoke, etc...
Obviously the current gpu and drives have to go, quite possibly more ram for a few programs, and I am going to need separate lightning fast drive arrays for operating system and NLE programs, raw camera video storage, edited video output, and a scratch drive. What is the current best way to get this box to fly? The onboard raid seems to get no love from those with a need for speed. Maybe a Thunderbolt card hooked to external raid for output? Current 12Gb/s raid card(s)? etc., Can one 12GB/s raid card handle two or three seperate arrays, i.e. operating system, raw footage storage, and scratch? Would I get better speed with multiple cards? As the models of hardware change so fast, if you know the model numbers for needed hardware that would be incredably helpfull.
