The upgrade went fine -- no problems at all. The youtube video and SDH's instructions worked great. The pc fired right up after the new cpu was installed.
(I never could get the Replicated Setup to save to USB -- I tried several different (older) USB flash drives, and tried two different USB ports -- but the BIOS was never able to write to the USB. But the PC is working, so apparently no BIOS changes were needed.)
Of possible interest to others: Of the six benchmarks I used to compare before and after: three improved, two got worse, and one did not change. The benchmarks are from the linux/ubuntu application called HardInfo (version 0.5.1).
Blowfish CryptoHash Fibonacci N-Queens FFT Raytracing
better= lower higher lower lower lower lower
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
102016 7.6 180.3 3.8 10.8 3.4 ---
110516 – old cpu 7.4 170.5 3.7 9.8 4.5 8.9
110516 – new cpu 3.7 357.4 3.6 13.8 1.7 19.4
110516 – again 3.7 218.7 3.6 13.9 1.7 19.5
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As the results show, three benchmarks improved: Blowfish, CryptoHash, and FFT.
Two benchmarks got worse: N-Queens, and Raytracing
One stayed about the same: Fibonacci
Am surprised by the variability of the benchmarks.
Next question is whether to buy and install a second heatsink and second CPU. Thoughts appreciated on whether such upgrades would result in (much) better benchmarks.
Thanks again for your help.
