Sorry for the number of questions. I have done those things before (changed a processor, upgraded BIOS, built a PC) but not recently and not on this box. I have appreciated your advice and assistance.
I have another question now about the CPU upgrade, if one of you experts will indulge me.
My new (Intel SLAEJ Xeon E5345) CPU will arrive soon. My plan was to swap out the CPU, reinsert the original heatsink, and cross my fingers. (And if that works, do more upgrades.)
Then it occurred to me that instead of swapping the new CPU for the old, I could (maybe) use both, at least at first. That is, insert the new CPU in the empty second slot, and fire it up.
Would that work? That is, will the xw8400 boot up and run with two different CPU models?
If so, would it do any harm to fire up it only one heatsink, for a short period, to see if it will boot and recognize the new CPU? If so, do you have an estimate on a safe period to run it without a second heatsink?
Thanks.
