xw8400 upgrade -- faster CPU?

I would like to improve the speed on my xw8400, which can lag when switching apps or when browsing (using linux). A colleague built a fast machine using pcpartpicker.com, which has much faster benchmarks (using hardinfo on ubuntu) than this HP.

Would appreciate suggestions/ideas on whether it would be possible to upgrade the CPU and memory to get faster speeds, but the continue to use the box, power supply, hard drives, dvd, etc. and maybe motherboard on the xw8400.

I see that old-geekster wrote that " HP motherboards are proprietary, I suggest replacing it in kind." So maybe the HP motherboard cannot be swapped for a newer (ATX or BTX or other standard) motherboard?

I also see that Master's Graduate wrote about a "significant experience-changing benefit, by moving to a SSD for your boot/programs drive." While an SSD drive may help, but I'm guessing it cannot provide the performance available with a newer, speeder processor.

Thoughts appreciated.
